As a graduate student, I asked a PI if I could join their lab, they told me their was always room for a good grad student, but then when I joined another lab, they came and acted surprised - turns out I wasn't sure if I counted as a "good" enough grad student in their book

Despite this, most advisors have no clear bar for their students.
