"Thus, God's existence is only the penultimate derivation of 'that than which nothing great can be conceived'; its ultimate consequence is the infinite human joy that is entailed by God's existence.

Patriots in control. Total Presbyterian Victory.
The core Protestant intuition leading to sola Scriptura: God is ontologically unique; therefore, his speech is ontologically unique.
As the Scripture is unique in nature, so it is comparably unique in authority.
Update on Laura:
Laura’s surgery is complete, and by the grace of God, her neurosurgeon was able to fully remove the glioma (brain tumor). We are deeply grateful for your prayers. Thank you so much for carrying her through this moment.
Please continue praying. We won’t know yet how her speech and cognition were affected, and it will be 2–3 weeks before genetic testing reveals more about the risk of recurrence. Thank you again for your love, support, and prayers.
"Now a mere man could not have satisfied for the whole human race, and God was not bound to satisfy; hence it behooved Jesus Christ to be both God and man."
-Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiae, pt. III, q. 1, a. 2
Thankful for the sacred trust and opportunity to preach the Word @ProvidenceSI this evening. May God bring the increase.

The church fathers can teach us so much. We stand on their shoulders. But one conviction they themselves stressed is that they were not equal to Scripture. We honor the church fathers not only by listening to them, but by measuring their teaching in the clearer light of God's Word.
Here is an example from Augustine:
"As regards our writings, which are not a rule of faith or practice, but only a help to edification, we may suppose that they contain some things falling short of the truth in obscure and recondite matters, and that these mistakes may or may not be corrected in subsequent treatises.... In the innumerable books that have been written latterly we may sometimes find the same truth as in Scripture, but there is not the same authority. Scripture has a sacredness peculiar to itself. In other books the reader may form his own opinion, and perhaps, from not understanding the writer, may differ from him, and may pronounce in favor of what pleases him, or against what he dislikes. In such cases, a man is at liberty to withhold his belief, unless there is some clear demonstration or some canonical authority to show that the doctrine or statement either must or may be true. But in consequence of the distinctive peculiarity of the sacred writings, we are bound to receive as true whatever the canon shows to have been said by even one prophet, or apostle, or evangelist" (Against Faustus 11.5).
