$TSLA's Monster Move; Sum of the Parts
Since TSLA reported earnings on April 22nd, the stock is up 46% (adding $350B in mkt cap). Here's my "sum of the stock rip" math:
• 10% of the move came today. News that Tesla's Board is working on a contingency plan in case Elon Musk’s 2018 pay package remains voided reminded investors that the Board is actively planning on him sticking around.
• 25% of the move was driven by the pause on China tariffs on May 10th, which made it more likely that Tesla can maintain current pricing. This suggests that part costs are less likely to spike by 145%, as previously feared.
• 65% of the move can be attributed to two key updates from the quarter: first, automotive gross margin came in slightly better than expected, signaling that profitability isn’t in free fall despite a 13% YoY decline in deliveries; second, Tesla reiterated the timeline for launching its ride-hailing service in Austin.
Ride-hailing is a massive opportunity. This year in the U.S., Uber and Lyft are expected to generate about $90 billion in gross bookings across roughly 4 billion rides. It's a winner-takes-most market. For context, Tesla is projected to generate approximately $100 billion in total revenue this year. In other words, ride-hailing could materially move the needle—especially considering its high operating margin (50–70%) compared to Tesla’s current sub-10% margin.
@MuldoonMartin@garyblack00@TeslaBoomerMama b4 the problem was "elon insisting on not needing p.r. or advertising." now the problem is just "elon" & "no advertising or p.r." p.r. wont fix the garbage that comes out of elon's mouth
