Mahmoud fears being thought of as too "right wing" by her Labour party colleagues. So, we get this: a plan to bring Afghans and Palestinians to Britain.
Such a scheme is constantly likened to legal avenues for Ukrainians. As if Afghans (22x more likely to commit sex crimes than UK nationals) are comparable to European migrants.
Labour also thinks this kind of 'legal' migration cures all. But it doesn't. The biggest source of legal migration to the UK is from India. And yet more than 4,000 Indians came here on small boats last year. People will come whether the route is legal or not. They come because there is an established diaspora (so-called 'chain migration'). Or for the benefits. The net cost to taxpayers of a legal asylum claimant is nearly £500,000.
But don't let any of this concern you. Our Home Secretary no longer needs to worry about being seen as a bit 'Reformy' on the Labour conference floor.
