Surefire path to encouraging more competition is to limit what they can charge! 🤦♂️
What a total buffoon. Hasn’t taken an ounce of responsibility for the dire straights this province finds itself in. He cannot be trusted…….send him packing.
Today in Kelowna I committed to taking on the grocery giants to protect your family from rising costs.
Big grocery chains have been using inflation as cover to jack up prices, while the billionaire families behind Loblaws and Save-On grew their wealth by $4.4 billion last year alone.
My plan:
1. Cap corporate profits on milk, eggs, butter, cheese, chicken and turkey
2. Stop them from blocking new grocery stores
3. End shrinkflation with clear unit pricing
4. Ban surveillance pricing
5. Give local grocers a fair shot with a new food terminal in the Lower Mainland
The conservative parties won't stand up to the grocery giants. I will.
Let's keep building BC strong.
So let me get this straight, @Dave_Eby launches an entire campaign around Buy Canada, then goes and stands in front of Cdn-owned Save-on-Foods and slams BC billionaire owner Jimmy Pattison (who donates 10% of annual wealth per year to charity) as a profit gouger, when Pattison is helping him fund $75m towards the NDP's new St. Paul's hospital through the largest donation by a private citizen to a medical facility in Canadian history?
Ooooooookay.
Your government supported unwitnessed safer supply programs that flooded communities with diverted hydromorphone. Your colleagues then tried to cover up this scandal and only acknowledged the scale of the problem after two years of persistent reporting made it impossible to ignore.
While I commend you for wanting to help vulnerable people, you are indirectly responsible for an enormous amount of suffering.
Premier Eby says BC home prices are falling faster than anywhere in Canada and rents have dropped 26 months straight. His answer is to raise the spec tax again and hit builders with an escalating "Unsold Condo Tax."
This is the same government that posted a record $13.3 billion deficit, raised income tax on the lowest bracket, expanded the PST, and is cutting 15,000 public service jobs to plug the hole. When a government runs out of money, every problem starts looking like a reason for a new tax.
Sir Winston Churchill is credited with the right response: a nation trying to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket trying to lift himself up by the handle.
His own numbers sink his so-called plan. In a falling market, nobody is hoarding condos to flip. Finished, unsold units are a builder's inventory, and builders want to sell them. They're unsold because the buyers have gone.
The "up to 5,000 homes" is a ceiling disguised as a promise. And those units already exist. Forcing them onto the market adds zero new supply. It just transfers the loss from the builder to the lender and tells both not to finance the next tower. Unlock 5,000 homes today, and you lose far more that never get built in 2029.
Some builders are holding units back waiting for prices to recover? Carrying costs already punish that. The tax can't tell a strategic hold from a failed sale, so it hits both.
B.C.’s spec tax just doubled this year, with another increase already legislated for 2027. There isn't a full year of data on the last hike, and he wants another one.
Blaming Trump's trade war while raising taxes on BC property doesn't lower anyone's costs. It’s another example of how fiscally inept Eby’s government truly is.
And "BC Strong" is the Liberals' "Canada Strong" with the province swapped in. Borrowed slogan, borrowed money, borrowed time. #bcpoli
@rparmar_BC Nobody cares about this. This is entirely a referendum on Eby and and you and your pathetic dismal record. You’re forestry ffs…..what a total disaster. Can’t talk about your files and results they’re so bad. Wanna talk leaders………Appadurai.
@Dave_Eby Everything you’ve put your hands on you’ve wrecked. Bragging about this sounds like Trump. You remain a clear and present danger to the Province and its citizens. Electing @LDoerkson is essential. Your culture wars attempting to mask your total inability to lead must end.
@LoveMy7Wood Real innovation…..just not perhaps in the way we conventionally think about it. Langone and Blank, among other founders, built perhaps which was the first big box store model. Now it is almost ubiquitous. Such a great story……and you’re correct, I would not have guessed it
@NYDailyNews I only follow the Mets from a distance, but honest question…..is this literally not the exact same commitment your hear from their Management every year? I thought Lindor was supposed to be evidence of that? Then Bichette? Does Maangement have ANY credibility left?
@rupasubramanya Not only lost their jobs, but were denied their EI benefits that they had paid into for years. The attempt to thread the semantic needle is infuriating.
@IceGuardiansPod@CarShield Omitting Messier is malpractice. Didn’t fight as much second half of his career and was not just a great fighter, but he terrified all comers.
Reminder that Barton was appointed by JT as Ambassador to China in 2019. Why was none of this discussed at the time? A massive indictment against JT. A truly lost decade, one that most Cdns frustratingly cheered on, or were apologists for. We were a laughingstock.
Carney czar Dominic Barton recounts that Chinese officials described Canada to him as "all hat and no cattle," a humiliating characterization of Canada’s credibility and ability to execute projects.
With respect, this statement from former AGs is at best totally meaningless, and at worst totally misleading. It’s like saying “all contracts are good” without getting into the substance of said contracts.
Worse, it ignores the fact that Eby's treaties are very different and far more concerning than previously-negotiated treaties.
Eby’s treaties:
➡️Embed UNDRIP (as in the K’omoks Treaty).
➡️Contain undemocratic “co-management” provisions akin to the Land Act Amendments.
➡️Give away BC’s provincial parks (2 being transferred via the Te’mexw Treaty alone).
➡️Hand over historic sites like Hatley Park & Castle.
➡️Entail massive transfers of public land & money, much of it undisclosed, with little if anything in return.
➡️Shut the public out of crucial info, even as that info is made available to the Indigenous public.
➡️Involve signing modern treaties overtop of historic treaties, with implications for all of Canada.
What Eby’s treaties do NOT do is just as problematic:
🚫They do NOT provide certainty. They’re “living agreements” that provide no finality at all.
🚫They do NOT provide stability. A deal signed with one group = threats of legal challenges & civil disobedience from other groups.
🚫They do NOT set out “exhaustive” rights as in prior models, but instead provide processes to allow for further exercisable rights to be asserted, meaning...
🚫They do NOT fully protect private property because private landowners are NOT necessarily shielded from such claims (link to legal analysis below).
🚫And, they do NOT guarantee continued public access to parks and public lands.
Most of these provisions do not appear in any of the previous modern or historic treaties in Canada.
Acting as though Eby's radical treaties are comparable to Canada's historic and prior modern-era treaties is straight-up irresponsible.
to answer Coyne’s straw poll, the correct response is #1. There is a story here, whether you want to cover it or not. But the job is to cover the story, report. Listen to the testimony. Does he think these folks are lying?
Possibility 1. This is a serious and significant inquiry and every single reporter in Ottawa is conspiring to cover it up.
Possibility 2. This is obvious horseshit.
I’m a lifelong British Columbian and a proud Canadian. We will never, ever, EVER be the 51st state. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
But Eby’s parody-like performance of BC pride contrasts sharply with his lamenting of BC as a “colonial mistake” & Canada Day as “difficult for many.”
He’s a Premier whose government says the very phrase “British Columbians” is exclusionary.
Whose ministers openly deride our citizens as “settlers,” “colonizers” & “uninvited guests.”
Whose curriculum teaches our kids to “develop mindsets of cultural humility.”
Whose government is hellbent on tearing down our history, “decolonizing” our museums, undermining our democracy, jeopardizing our sovereignty, killing our prosperity and giving our parks & public lands away.
Call me cynical, but Eby’s caricature of Canadian patriotism looks about as authentic on him as that red plaid coat.
@jessicahadwin and if skating isn’t your thing, we once did a huge family event there at Xmas and took the horse drawn sleighs along the trail to far end of lake, was loads of fun……and so beautiful.
@jessicahadwin Go to Lake Louise and see the ice sculptures and go for a skate on the lake. Have lunch in the bistro at the Chateau LL overlooking the lake. Will be a great day, promise. for as world class a destination Banff is, dining is mediocre. Lupo is best call for dinner in Banff
@TrishHrytsak@jessicahadwin Ive visited the ice sculptures many many times over Xmas. If that’s changed it is within the last few years. While summer is peak and limited cad access, I’ve yet to experience that in the winter, but is has been a few years since I was at the chateau at Xmas.
