DET vs KC Overview (Next morning)
I was going to do this last night but as a Lions fan in excitement, I didn't want emotion/bias to alter it
Starting with the Chiefs
Lets start with the obvious, Kelce and Chris Jones not playing is the reason the Chiefs lost. Yes, their WRs underperformed, but we should have never expected anything else. None of them are "first-option" material and the only person we thought could be, was Skyy Moore, who might have been ready to carve out an every snap role this season but definitely not a role to be THE guy and it showed.
Kadarius Toney's performance basically showed why he was so raw coming out of college and that his role should be reverted as a gadget guy
Skyy Moore did struggle overall, but all yesterday showed me is that he is unlikely to be the #1 guy, however I still think he can play a role as a WR2 or WR3 for the Chiefs
Patrick Mahomes still did Mahomes things, but when your WRs play like they did, he can only do so much. Once Kelce returns, expect the same old Mahomes stats. But, there were also some bad throws by Mahomes that made his WRs look worse (throws at the knees on slants, behind the WR when they were wide open, etc)
Defensively, They adjusted to Amon-Ra St. Brown well after he had some early success. They limited the run-game efficiency well, especially with Jones out. I need to go back and watch the film, but I almost think they overcompensated the run-game without Jones because Goff had so little pressure on him in the play-action.
Now for the Lions
That defense stepped up. The Chiefs WRs helped them look good of course, but with a secondary that has never played together before and the Chiefs still have one of the premier Offensive Line units in the NFL, there were plays made at every level to try and make Mahomes' life difficult.
Aidan Hutchison seemed like he was getting pressure on every play despite his matchup false-starting every single snap and getting doubled
CJ Gardner-Johnson, welcome to Detroit my friend. Multiple huge tackles and punching the ball out of Skyy Moores hands late in the game. He is not a 1v1 lockdown corner, but it felt like he was everywhere last night.
Rookie Jack Campbell made a spectacular coverage play that would have given the Chiefs a 1st down in threatening territory, which was then followed by the Pick 6 on the same possession.
Offensively, they took advantage of Chris Jones being out. Ran the ball A LOT and utilized the play-action. That is going to be the Lions recipe all season, but having Chris Jones out made that 10x more effective
Amon-Ra St. Brown found early success, and even could have had a 70 yard TD wide open behind the defense if Goff wasn't getting pressured as he broke free
David Montgomery and Jahmyrr Gibbs are going to be good back there. Montgomery is good in pass protection and is a solid traditional runner behind a great O-Line and his role showed yesterday.
Gibbs' usage will increase as the season goes along, only about 9 touches last night which shocked a lot of people, but its his first game in the NFL away vs the SB Champs, we should not be that surprised. But when you watch some of the plays he made, he has super star RB written all over him.
Overall
If you are a Lions fan, be excited. If you are a Chiefs fan, as long as Jones and Kelce return, you should not be worried.
