I bet we all know this actor? he was the lead actor in MY MISTER with IU. Do you remember now?

His name is Lee Sun-kyun, he experienced one of the most heartbreaking stories in the Korean entertainment industry.

In 2023, the Parasite star became the subject of a highly publicized drug investigation after allegations surfaced linking him to illegal drug use.

Lee consistently denied knowingly taking any illegal substances and tested negative in the drug tests conducted during the investigation.

At the same time, he reported being the victim of blackmail and extortion by individuals connected to the case.

As the investigation continued, Lee faced intense media scrutiny, public criticism, and repeated police questioning.

On December 27, 2023, Lee Sun-kyun was found dead at the age of 48.

Following his death, the individuals accused of blackmailing and extorting him were arrested, prosecuted, and later received prison sentences. A police officer was also penalized for leaking investigation-related information to the media.

His death sparked a national conversation in South Korea about media pressure, privacy, public shaming, and the treatment of public figures during ongoing investigations.

The damage caused by the distribution of false information continues to grow. Through platforms such as YouTube, misinformation spreads more rapidly than ever, and with the addition of artificial intelligence (AI), it has become even more convincing in appearance. Attorney Ko Sang-rok of Law Firm Pil, who represents actor Kim Soo-hyun, stated, 'People may not be wielding actual knives, but they are repeatedly destroying lives with falsehoods. It is a grave crime, close to character assassination.'

Attorney Ko’s greatest concern is that the spread of false information is becoming industrialized. In particular, competition among one-person media creators for views, combined with lax platform oversight, has resulted in the repeated production of sensational allegations and false claims. He said, 'Once news spreads through portals and social media and a particular narrative takes hold, efforts to correct false information are dismissed as mere excuses.'

He also criticized some legal professionals whom he believes have acted as shields for cyber wreckers. 'There are legal practitioners who defend the spread of false information for political interests or legal fees,' he said. 'For example, seeing a lawyer—whose role is to uphold the rule of law—claim that fabricated evidence against actor Kim Soo-hyun is genuine and sensationally incite public opinion is like a black comedy.'

Another problem, he said, is that the judicial system responds far more slowly than false information spreads. This concern is one reason Kim Soo-hyun’s side filed a 12 billion won (approximately $8.7 million) damages lawsuit against Kim Se-ui, head of Garo Sero Institute, and the family of the late actress Kim Sae-ron. The reasoning is that similar crimes will continue unless the legal consequences greatly exceed the profits earned from spreading false information. Attorney Ko explained, 'We must establish a powerful precedent showing that those who spread false information will face complete financial and social ruin. Since the actual damages suffered by Mr. Kim Soo-hyun and his agency are estimated at around 30 billion won, we are considering adjusting the amount claimed depending on the results of the investigation.'

Attorney Ko described the incident caused by Garo Sero Institute as a 'social disaster' and called for a change in public perception. 'A dangerous mindset has emerged that celebrities deserve to be attacked simply because they are famous and earn a lot of money,' he said. 'Being subjected to a witch hunt based on false information is not someone else’s problem—it is a problem that affects all of us.'

弁護士は事案を法的に定義し、そのために必要な事実を依頼人に確認し、依頼人自身が重要だと気づいていなかった資料や情報の中から法的に意味のある部分を見つけ出して論理を構築します。そして、その論理と証拠をもとに捜査機関や裁判所を説得し、依頼人のために最善の弁護を行い、依頼人が法的に不当な扱いを受けないよう助けることが本来の役割です
成り行きから、昨年9月、世論が極度に悪化した状況の中で、公開の場で弁論に乗り出さざるを得ないと判断した例外的な状況がありました。私はこの事件が法的に、そして社会的にどのような意味を持つのかを改めて定義し、その観点から公開弁論を行いました。
その中心には、私が一昨年、ツヤン氏の件について論評した頃から一貫して強調してきた価値観、すなわち被害者保護と、犯罪被害を受けた人が再び元の場所へ戻れるよう社会が支えるべきだという考えがありました。
今でも、自分の言葉がすべての人を説得したとは思っていません。おそらくそのためでしょう。7年間にわたって犯罪を繰り返してきた主犯が、最終的にこの一件によって送検・拘束されるという重大な結果が出たにもかかわらず、いまだに捜査機関が明らかにした事実から目を背けたり、問題の本質から外れた話でこの事件の被害者に二次加害を続けたりする人たちがオンライン上で活動しているのです。
私はずっと同じことを語ってきたつもりです。自分の言葉がどれほどの力を持つのか、それとも卵で岩を打つような無力な行為に終わるのか、それは私自身にも分かりません。
ただ、なぜ一部の人たちが私のしていることを自分たちがしてきたことと同じ土俵に置いて比較しようとするのか、私には理解が難しいのです。私は法律家であり代理人としての役割を果たしているのであって、YouTuberとして意見を述べているのではないと、これまで何度もお話ししてきました。
それにもかかわらず私の言葉がそのまま受け取られない理由は、結局のところ私が十分な信頼を与えられなかったからなのでしょう。何が間違っていたのか、なぜ真心が伝わらなかったのか、自分に何がもっとできたのかを今も考え続けています。
私はキム・スヒョン俳優の事件以外にも、皆さんが名前を聞けば分かるような類似の事件を担当しています。しかし、それらの事件について公に語ることはありません。その必要がないからです。真実は捜査と裁判を通じて明らかになればよいのです。
ただ、この事件では成り行き上、メディア対応もある程度引き受けることになりました。そのため、本当に必要な時に、本当に必要な方法で、最小限の範囲において証拠や資料を公開し、大衆を説得するべきかどうかについても、非常に慎重に考えてきました。
昨日、MBCの「ストレート」に提供した独占報道資料も、同じ文脈によるものです。捜査を通じて真実が明らかになりつつある今、社会的に必要な企画だと判断したため、必要最小限の範囲で放送局に協力したのです。
しかし、捜査中の事案の真実を最終的に明らかにするのは、あくまでも捜査機関と司法手続きの役割です。弁護士の役割は、その過程で依頼人のために最善を尽くして弁護することであり、捜査機関やメディアに代わって真実を解明することではありません。私はその一線を守るために努力してきました。
大きな出来事を経験したにもかかわらず、いまだにこの点を誤解している方々がいるため、誤解を正したくてお話ししました。
今後も、この件に関しては他の関係者に対する捜査や裁判が残っています。これからは検察が被告人の立場となった加害者たちを相手にする段階です。この時点からは、少なくとも刑事裁判に関して被害者側の弁護団ができることは限られています。
捜査によって真実が明らかになった以上、これからは社会が被害者を支えることに集中できるよう願っています。裁判における無罪推定は、裁判を行う裁判官に求められる法的原則です。
長期間の捜査を通じて警察が真実を明らかにし、検察が主犯に対する逮捕状を請求し、裁判所が審査の末にこれを発付し、さらに勾留の適否を争う審査請求まで棄却したのであれば、今や自らの無罪を立証する責任は、囚人服を着て裁判に臨む主犯および関係被告人たちにあります
私の言葉がどこまで届くのかは分かりません。しかし、私が2年以上にわたって訴え続けてきた被害者保護の原則と、被害者が受けた苦痛に対する社会的な感受性を高めるべきだという声を、空しいこだまで終わらせないためにも、私は自分の信念に反することを言うことはできません

Following the arrest of Garo Sero Research Institute (Gaseyeon) chief Kim Se-eui, many believe that public sentiment has gradually begun shifting in favor of actor Kim Soo-hyun. Public perception is also changing. Whereas attention was initially focused on the allegations themselves, a growing number of people are now asking whether Kim Soo-hyun may have suffered excessive damage.

The controversy surrounding Kim Soo-hyun appears to be reaching a significant turning point.

After more than a year of allegations and public disputes, people are increasingly revisiting the case to distinguish what was factual and what may have been exaggerated or distorted. In particular, following Kim Se-eui’s arrest, there is growing assessment that public opinion has steadily tilted toward Kim Soo-hyun.

During the police and prosecution investigations, allegations involving the dissemination of false information, edited materials, and AI-generated voice manipulation reportedly emerged. The court also issued an arrest warrant, citing concerns such as the possibility of evidence destruction.

Of course, the judicial process is still ongoing. The final legal judgment rests with the courts.

However, based solely on what has been disclosed through the investigation so far, there appears to be broad agreement that the social stigma and reputational damage Kim Soo-hyun endured over the past year were far from insignificant.

In the entertainment industry, allegations often spread far more quickly than the truth can be established. Once a negative image takes hold, it tends to outlast any explanation.

Kim Soo-hyun was no exception.

After the controversy erupted, both advertisers and content producers adopted a wait-and-see approach. Project releases were suspended, and advertising contracts effectively came to a halt. In many ways, public judgment proceeded ahead of legal conclusions.

◆ Commercial Filming Resumes: Recovery Potential Now Seen as Greater Than the Risks

Recently, however, the atmosphere has changed noticeably.

Throughout the controversy, Kim Soo-hyun’s side consistently maintained that they would “prove the truth no matter what.”

Investigative authorities later applied defamation-related charges against Kim Se-eui and examined allegations involving false claims and manipulated evidence. Through the processes of seeking and obtaining an arrest warrant, followed by detention, authorities are said to have verified a substantial portion of the relevant facts.

Public perception has also begun to shift.

While the initial focus was on the allegations themselves, many people are now asking:

“Didn’t Kim Soo-hyun end up suffering excessive harm?”

On online communities and social media platforms, opinions such as:

“Compensation through civil lawsuits can be addressed later, but the losses caused by the suspension of his activities should first be restored,”

have increasingly gained support.

For celebrities, trust is their greatest asset.

And the market is often the first to signal whether that trust is returning.

Recent movements within the advertising industry involving Kim Soo-hyun are being interpreted in this context. Advertisers are highly sensitive to public opinion. If uncertainty surrounding a controversy remains unresolved, they rarely step forward.

The Straight program first investigated in detail the true nature of the exposé that targeted actor Kim Soohyun, which the police later concluded had been fabricated.

Garosero Institute began broadcasting about Kim Soohyun on March 10 of last year, about three weeks after Kim Saeron had taken her own life.

They put up the provocative title: “Shocking exclusive. Kim Soohyun, the man who led Kim Saeron to her death.”

“Kim Soohyun led Kim Saeron to her death. So, in November 2015, Kim Saeron and Kim Soohyun began dating. For six years. At the time, Kim Saeron was 15 years old. A second-year middle school student. Kim Soohyun was 27 years old. Already from May 2022, Kim Saeron had become completely broke. She became penniless, and then suddenly was told to pay back 700 million won. There’s no way she could live.”

Garosero Institute claimed that the late Kim Saeron had dated Kim Soohyun for six years starting from when she was a minor at 15 years old in the second year of middle school, and that Kim Saeron’s death was caused by debt pressure from Kim Soohyun’s side. Their claim was that Kim Saeron had caused a drunk-driving accident in 2022 and incurred a penalty of 700 million won, which Kim Soohyun’s agency had paid on her behalf, and that Kim Soohyun’s side then pressured her to repay it, which drove Kim Saeron to her death.

Garosero Institute continued making exposés, claiming they had forensic evidence from Kim Saeron’s phone and laptop and had numerous pieces of evidence.

In the month following their first broadcast, they aired programs targeting Kim Soohyun on two occasions, calling him a “depraved pervert” and pushing the narrative that dating a minor was established fact. In the process, photos and videos containing Kim Soohyun’s private life spread uncontrollably at rapid speed.

The channel’s subscriber count, which had been around 900,000, surpassed 1 million in less than a month.

“Up to now, 1,024,630 of you have subscribed, and I ask that you please help us reach 1.3 million today with more subscriptions. Now, our Gaseyeon, who is not afraid of anyone…”

Articles that simply picked up Garosero Institute’s claims without any independent verification also poured out. Garosero Institute head Kim Seui held a press conference together with the attorney representing the late Kim Saeron’s bereaved family, and at this event he even revealed KakaoTalk conversations that he claimed Kim Saeron had exchanged with Kim Soohyun during her time as a minor.

“Just from looking at the KakaoTalk messages, you can see it clearly. I would actually like to ask Kim Soohyun himself: if this kind of relationship was not a romantic one, then what kind of relationship was it? At the time, Kim Saeron was 17 years old.”

Kim Soohyun held his own press conference and denied the allegations, saying he had not dated her during her time as a minor.

“I did not date the deceased during the time she was a minor. And the claim that the deceased made a tragic choice because I turned away from her, or because my agency pressured her over her debt, is also not true. There are far too many facts in these KakaoTalk messages that could not have been written by the deceased.”

Then, last May, Garosero Institute held yet another press conference, claiming they had obtained an audio file in which someone admits that Kim Soohyun dated Kim Saeron during her time as a minor.

“This recording is a recording that actress Kim Saeron made with the consent of both herself and the informant. The content of this recording is extremely shocking and explicit. This recording was made on January 10 this year, American time, Eastern U.S. time.”

It was a recording they claimed to have received from an anonymous tipster. With both the KakaoTalk conversations and now an audio recording, Kim Soohyun came under criticism for having made false denials.

After Kim Se-ui was placed under investigation and detained over allegations of spreading fake news about Kim Soo-hyun, So posted photographs of his children and wrote:

“Se-ui, do you see my children? Do you know how much pain they have endured every single day because of the fake news you spread?”

He described the hurtful comments his children had been forced to hear:

“‘I heard your dad used to work at bars. My dad told me that.’ ‘I heard your dad got plastic surgery. My mom said so.’ My children had to bear these ridiculous lies because of your fake news.”

He concluded:

“You tarnished the reputation that I protected for 18 years for myself and my children. I will do everything in my power to ensure that you receive the harshest punishment the law allows. Please look forward to it.”
