The Yenuka recently expressed that the reason there is a greater difficulty nowadays to cry over the Temples destruction, than previous generations, is because at least subconsciously we can sense its rebuilding.
As such while there may be a real grappling with the rebbes assurance as to the coming of Moshiach 30+ years ago, we as Jews are not meant to live in the past especially if it brings us into a negative headspace and so we move forward, not dismissing, God forbid what was said, to the contrary, with the assuredness that we will yet understand as we will all 2,000 years of exile.
