🚨 Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya suffers fractured ribs after "most difficult day" in Israeli detention

Detained Gaza hospital director Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya suffered fractured ribs after severe beatings and endured what the Palestinian Prisoners' Media Office described as his "most difficult day" in detention on July 27. 

🔸 The office said the doctor, who suffers from heart disease and high blood pressure, has experienced a serious deterioration in his health.

🔸 He also spent 21 days in solitary confinement under harsh conditions and continues to be assaulted despite his critical condition.

🔸 Separately, Physicians for Human Rights said Israeli prison authorities provided a medical report confirming injuries to Abu Safiya's eye, head, and chest, and that it has petitioned an Israeli administrative court to allow an independent doctor to examine him.

🔸 Abu Safiya has been detained since December 27, 2024, after Israeli forces seized him while he was working at Kamal Adwan Hospital during attacks on northern Gaza. He remains imprisoned under Israel's "unlawful combatant" designation, which allows prolonged detention without charges or trial.

I walked past this church in Gaza’s Old City, and the moment I saw it, every memory of what happened inside its walls came rushing back.

When the bombing became unbearable during the early days of the war, the church opened its doors to everyone. No one asked about anyone’s religion. Muslims and Christians took shelter under the same roof, fleeing death, believing that a place of worship would be the safest place they could find.

The church was small and never meant to hold so many people, yet it sheltered more than 600 civilians. People slept on the floor, trying to survive one day at a time. At the height of the famine, when desperate crowds searched everywhere for even a single meal, those caring for the church shared the little food they had with everyone inside. There was no difference between Muslim and Christian; they all shared the same scarce food because hunger spared no one.

But even this refuge did not escape the war. The building next to the church was struck without warning, causing severe damage to the church itself and killing and injuring civilians who had sought shelter there, believing it would be the last place touched by the violence.

Whenever I pass this place, I no longer see just a church. I see a place that once sheltered hundreds of people during one of the darkest moments of the war, before tragedy reached them there as well.

Notice what is never the enemy.

The hedge fund manager who bought your neighborhood and raised your rent 40 percent is never the enemy.

The pharmaceutical executive who priced insulin at a level that makes rationing a survival strategy for American diabetics is never the enemy.

The defense contractor CEO who has budgeted for cost overruns as a profit mechanism and built political protection into every congressional district where a factory or base exists is never the enemy.

The private equity firm that bought the hospital, extracted its capital, laid off the nurses, and left the community without emergency services is never the enemy.

They are never on the screen.

They are never the face you're shown when you're told to be angry.

They are never the subject of the prime time segment.

They are the people who own the screen.

The enemy is always someone who looks like the person next to you.

Always someone who can be found in your neighborhood, your workplace, your family dinner.

Never someone who can be found on the Forbes list, the Davos guest list, the Epstein flight manifest.

This is not accidental.
