Iraqi leaders come and go but the system stays the same an entire government system based on only one thing — serving Iran’s Supreme Leader, and funding sectarian terrorist militias. This is the same formula that created ISIS in the first place under former PM Maliki. Whether it’s PM Zaydi (who ran a bank sanctioned for supporting Iran) his predecessor Sudani (who had a literal terrorist as his national security adviser) or his predecessors the system is the same and the game of musical chairs irrelevant.
I hope PM Zaydi proves me wrong with his actions!
As I get back to Washington, D.C., I want to welcome the announcement that the United States intends to remove Syria from the State Sponsor of Terrorism list. It's clear that this designation has been a roadblock to Syria's much-needed reconstruction and economic development — including from Syrian-Michiganders — after more than a decade of conflict.
In the meantime, the new Syrian government has demonstrated a willingness to fight terrorism. It's time to open a new chapter in the US-Syria relationship and to give Syrians a real chance at stability and economic development.
The Syrian diaspora, anchored by a strong and successful community in Michigan, is ready to help lead that effort -- and that requires the full and speedy implementation of this decision. https://t.co/ysdMn362rd
Today @POTUS informed Congress of his intent to rescind Syria’s designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism. This historic step opens new possibilities for economic opportunity and recovery, giving the Syrian people a chance at greatness.
