The Opta report released today on Lionel Messi is genuinely terrifying in every aspect.

Opta revealed that Messi has been involved in the most shots at a single World Cup, with 59 shot involvements. That includes 34 shots taken by Messi himself and 25 chances he created that ended in shots. It’s his highest total ever at a World Cup, surpassing his 53 shot involvements at the 2022 World Cup.

What’s even more astonishing is that the second player on the list is Achraf Hakimi with 31 shot involvements—almost half of Messi’s total. Even within Argentina, the second-highest is Alexis Mac Allister with just 18, meaning Messi produced more than 3 times as many.

It gets even crazier. Only 7 players in World Cup history have managed at least 30 shot involvements while accounting for at least half of their team’s total shots in a single tournament. Two of those seven entries belong to the same player: Messi at the 2022 World Cup and Messi again at the 2026 World Cup. He’s the only player to appear twice on that list.

And that’s not all. Across the last two World Cups, Messi has been directly involved in 22 goals in 14 games—double the 11 goal contributions in 19 games he recorded across his first four World Cups (2006–2018). In the knockout stages alone, he has produced 13 goal contributions in 8 games over the last two tournaments, after scoring no knockout goals at all across his first four World Cups.

These numbers tell the story of perhaps the greatest individual World Cup redemption ever. From a player who had virtually no knockout legacy before 2018, to one who has dominated every aspect of the last two tournaments at the ages of 35 and 39. Truly extraordinary. 👏❤️
