August 8, 1760: Kouategeté, an Oswegatchie warrior sachem formerly allied with the French, reaches Ft. Lévis with Oneida and Mohawk diplomats who urge that their Catholic #Iroquois kin stay neutral in the impending battle. He was released from Oswego by the British days before.

August 7, 1760: The British army departs from Oswego & heads north toward Ft. Lévis along the east side of Lake Ontario. The vanguard is led by Lt. Col Haldimand. His regulars and rangers work to find safe channels for the sailing ships in the complex island geography.

#OTD 1760: The French 10-gun schooner Iroquoise is brought to Ft. Lévis. The ship, which ran aground August 1, is taking on a foot of water per hour and has 15 feet of her forward keel damaged.

#OTD 1760: The French 10-gun schooner Iroquoise runs aground on rocks in the upper St. Lawrence River. Capt. Pouchot dispatches boats to help in the vessel's recovery. The Iroquoise serves as the eyes & ears of the French garrison at Fort Lévis.

July 6, 1760: The British at #Oswego spot 2 French ships on #LakeOntario and send messengers to alert Joshua Loring at Niagara. Loring is the Boston-born commodore of Britain's lake fleet, former captain of the HMS Squirrel.

#OTD 1760: Letter from #Louisbourg reports 7 #RoyalNavy ships have sailed to intercept French ships rumored to be attempting to reach the St. Lawrence and re-take Quebec. The British are busy demolishing the French garrison.

June 18, 1760: The French dispatch 100 men aboard 2 sailing ships from Ft. Lévis to patrol around the British position at #Oswego on Lake Ontario.

5/31/1760: A "French Indian" arrives in New York colony via Oswego bearing intelligence on the poor state of New France. He travels to Schenectady with his sister to visit a man, Newkirk, who had been their prisoner and "son" for years until released in 1759.

4/28/1760: Mohawk hunters alert William Johnson to an enemy party crossing the Sacandaga River in the vicinity of Johnson's newest settlement (future Johnstown NY). 2 companies of local militia & Iroquois are ordered to be assembled and sent in "quest of said party."

4/27/1760: Mississauga Indians arrive at Ft. Lévis, the French outpost on the upper St. Lawrence River, and are outfitted to scout British #Oswego the following day.

#OTD 1760: The British approve food aid for their Mohawk allies, "more entitled to our assistance than any nation on the continent." Mohawk fields had been ruined by cattle being driven west to British frontier posts in late 1759.

#OTD 1760: Highlander Capt. Dunbar reports that Oneida Lake, a strategic waterway between Albany & Oswego, has recently thawed. He sends for critical supplies. The British garrison at the west end of lake is suffering from scurvy. 70 are ill, 30 not "able to crawl"

#OTD 1760: Capt. Pouchot at Ft. Lévis dispatches the Catholic Oswegatchie sachem Charles south to spy on the British at #Oswego. Charles and his party carry furs and claim to be #Iroquois hunters/traders in order to infiltrate the fort.

#OTD 1760: Captain Pouchot, the newly arrived commander of Ft. Lévis on the upper St. Lawrence River, holds a tense meeting with the Oneida sachem Tacoua Onenda (Buried Meat). The Oneida is carrying diplomatic wampum to the Canadian #Iroquois on behalf of the British.
