When you make the gospel about what you do for Jesus (turn, try, cry, commit, pledge, etc) instead of what Jesus did for you by dying in your place for your sin on the cross, you put yourself and your commitment as the center of attention, not Jesus.

This kind of “gospel” insults his finished work on the cross and makes the gospel about you and what you do for Jesus instead of Jesus and what he did for you.

But when you preach faith alone in Christ alone as your only hope for salvation, you put the spotlight on Jesus.

He did all the work. He gets all the glory. We simply receive it by faith (John 1:12.)

All other gospels are “means of the flesh” and self-centered instead of Christ-honoring. They distract from the cross, appeal to the flesh and lead to boasting instead of worship.

“Those who want to impress people by means of the flesh are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ.
Not even those who are circumcised keep the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your circumcision in the flesh. May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Galatians 6:12-14
