今日、職場の休憩室で漫画を読んでいたら、50歳くらいのおっさんが入ってきて、開口一番、

「俺のカバンがなくなった。ガイジンのせいに決まってる！」

そのまま、外国人と思ったのか、肌の色の濃い若い女性に詰め寄り、

「ちょっちょ、おま、ちょっとこっちゃこい！」

と喚く姿は、この上なく不気味で醜悪だった。

ちなみに、私はその女性が外国籍なのかどうかすら知らない。
外見だけで国籍など分かるはずがないからだ。

私が立ち上がるのとほぼ同時に、職場の偉い人に連れていかれたが、結局、そもそも「カバンを盗まれた」という話自体が、ただの勘違いだったようだ。

「カバンがない」
↓
「盗まれたに違いない」
↓
「外国人がやったに違いない」
↓
「この女性は外国人に違いない」
↓
「この女性が盗んだに違いない」

どの段階にも、その結論を支える事実はなかった。

それでも本人の中では一本の線につながり、現実の人間に詰め寄るところまで進んだ。

偏見が「事実認定」に化け、人を動かす瞬間を、今日、目の前で見た。

社会全体から見れば、たった一人が起こした小さな出来事なのかもしれない。

しかし、詰め寄られた女性にとっては決して小さくない。

その女性が外国人なのかどうかすら分からない。
まして、仮に外国人だったとしても、それは窃盗を疑う理由には一切ならない。

それなのに、外見から国籍を推測し、その推測を犯罪の嫌疑にまで飛躍させた。

そして私は、今日たまたま、その一場面を目撃しただけだ。

これが彼女にとって初めてだったのかは分からない。

電車で。店で。職場で。街中で。

「外国人なら警戒して当然」という偏見が社会のあちこちにあるなら、同じような決めつけを別の場所でも向けられている可能性はある。

そう考えると、「一人の変なおっさんがいただけ」で片付けられる話でもないと思う。

引用元を見て思う。

「外国人が来たら追い出す」
「外国人に土地を買われる」

そんな言葉がテレビやSNSで、特に検証も批判もされず、「よくある意見」「普通の感覚」として繰り返される。

一つ一つは小さく見える。

しかし、その「小さなもの」の一つ一つには、実際にそれを向けられる人がいる。

そして繰り返されれば、

「外国人なら警戒して当然」
「外国人なら疑って当然」
「外国人なら排除して当然」

という偏見そのものが、少しずつ「普通」になっていく。

平時には「ちょっとした暴言」「個人の偏見」として流されていたものが、災害や社会的混乱の中では、

「外国人がやったらしい」
「あいつが怪しい」

という根拠のない「事実」に化け、現実の誰かへ向かうことがある。

差別は、ある日突然、巨大な暴力として生まれるのではない。

「この程度なら」
「ただの冗談だ」
「個人の意見だ」
「気にしすぎだ」

小さいが故に見過ごされ、繰り返され、折り重なり、いつしか偏見は「普通」になる。

今日のおっさんは、実際には盗難すら起きていなかったのに、偏見から「外国人の窃盗犯」を作り上げ、目の前の女性をそこに当てはめた。

今回は周囲が止めた。だからそこで終わった。

しかし、同じ決めつけが社会の中で広く共有されれば、それはもう一人の人間の偏見だけでは済まない。

差別は、小さいうちから差別なのだ。
人を傷つけ、人を殺すところまで巨大になってから、初めて問題にするのでは遅い。

それを目の当たりにしたからこそ、引用元のテレビで流れた一言を「この程度」とは思えない。

言葉の先には人がいる。
そして今日、その矛先に立たされる人を、私は実際に目の前で見たのだ。

I can kind of understand a gradual raise over several years. It's still ridiculous because wages aren't going up, but inflation blah blah blah sure whatever. But there WILL be people who scrape together 70,000 (more for families) in the next 2 months only to be REJECTED!

Calling someone “retarded” and reducing their entire existence to an insult does not protect the truth.
Harsh words may feel strong and satisfying to you in the moment,
but they close every door, replace dialogue with contempt, and leave only pain and distance.

And that pain will eventually come back to you as well.
There is no need to insult people whose innate sex and soul do not align.

Trans women and other LGBT people are not asking for your acceptance or understanding,
so your argument does not need cruelty.
They only ask you to leave them alone and watch from a distance.

You are capable of treating people with more kindness.
I believe that would also make your own life richer.
