Many people die when they fall asleep while smoking because the cigarette falls and sets the couch on fire. Regulators wanted the Cigarette Industry to create self-extinguishing cigarettes to prevent this from happening. But the Cigarette Industry worried that this would make smoking less pleasurable (it's a bummer to keep re-lighting cigarettes) and hurt sales.

So the cigarette industry came up with Spontaneous Human Combustion as an explanation instead — 'people just catch fire for no reason, it's a mystery.' In the 1970s and 80s, tabloid newspapers in the grocery store checkout line were filled with stories of Spontaneous Human Combustion — 'is it aliens, is it vengeful ghosts, are these secret Russian weapons?' — as the Cigarette Industry fended off regulation. Presumably those "stories" were written and paid for by the Cigarette Industry.

The Vaccine Industry, seeing the success of the Cigarette Industry at fending off safety regulation, borrowed its playbook. Thousands of children die each year following vaccination. So the Vaccine Industry came up with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) — 'children just die, no explanation, no investigation, it's a mystery.' The Back to Sleep campaign that encourages parents to place infants on their back to sleep was launched in 1994 by NIH and AAP to shift the blame to parents for vaccine induced deaths as the vaccine schedule expanded — 'it's your fault because the child was not sleeping in the right position.'

Now that the HPV shots are killing teens and the Covid shots are killing people of all ages, the Vaccine Industry has come up with Sudden Adolescent Death Syndrome (SADS) and Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (also SADS) — 'people just die, no explanation, no investigation, it's a mystery.' But really SIDS and SADS are just the ridiculous Spontaneous Human Combustion lie now being peddled by people in white coats.

Fact: ICE is a federal law enforcement agency, and its agents can arrest you.

Claim: You can’t be pulled out of your car by an ICE agent.

Fact: ICE agents can order or forcibly remove you from your car. Refusal may lead to force.

Claim: Cars are not considered a deadly weapon.

Fact: Under federal law (18 U.S.C. § 113(a)(3)), a vehicle can be a dangerous or deadly weapon if used in a way capable of causing death or serious bodily injury.

Claim: ICE can’t arrest U.S. citizens.

Fact: ICE can arrest a U.S. citizen for obstructing their work if it involves forcibly resisting, impeding, or interfering with federal officers.

Claim: Blocking a road with your vehicle is not a crime.

Fact: Obstructing a highway or public passage is a crime under state law, and a federal crime if the intent is to obstruct federal law enforcement.

I don’t think suspect in yesterday’s confrontation with federal agents, woke up that day planning to get killed. I really don’t. What I do think is that she probably thought she was provoking them in a way that would end with her getting yanked out of the car, maybe shoved to the ground, detained, something ugly but non-lethal. The kind of thing that turns into a viral video where they get to play the victims and paint ICE as monsters. That’s a scenario people assume is safe, especially if they’ve been around activism long enough to believe the script always ends the same way.

If her girlfriend was already outside the vehicle filming, that tells me this wasn’t spontaneous panic. That looks like intent to capture a moment. Maybe they thought, “We’ll push, they’ll overreact, we’ll get content.” I’m sure she didn’t think she’d get shot. I’m sure she thought she was in control of the situation.

But then reality intervenes. Maybe she didn’t see the officer in front of the car. Maybe she had tunnel vision and was focused on the agent next to her. But she did accelerate forward, and once a vehicle is moving toward an officer, the situation changes instantly. At that point, whether she meant to or not, she put herself into a lethal scenario, and she lost her life.

That’s tragic. It’s also not the same thing as “this just happened for no reason.”

And if it turns out there’s evidence that this was coordinated... that the girlfriend was setting this up, encouraging it, orchestrating it to get a viral confrontation... then yeah, I think she should face charges too. Not just because someone died, but because if you help engineer a dangerous situation and someone ends up dead, you don’t get to wash your hands of it afterward.

Sympathy doesn’t mean pretending people had no agency. And accountability doesn’t mean saying someone deserved to die. Both things can be true at the same time.
