Most people really enjoy hearing success stories, especially sports, but nearly every story has a background failure story.
Something that you learned that helped in the success side later.
Olympics are in the way.
Looking back to LA 1984 there are 22 events that Americanswon gold and haven't repeated as gold medalists. 17 events are still competed. LA '28 will be 44 years from LA '84
@maughanonc@huntsmancancer@neerajaiims I'm sure you'll be successful at your new role. Pleasure working with you over the years. Can't wait to hear what you accomplish.
@TFrei Made a million on United maybe around 2017. No ceremony but got the same in the mail. Thought maybe 2 million was possible but thought better of that. 95% was continental US. There was no mileage club in the early 80's and flew united back then when I was competing
@zane_growth_ee Americans haven't figured out the 400m free is even more a sprint.
Negative split was the way they did it. Won't win anymore.
Who's the last American gold medalist in the 4 free? Good trivia
Swimmers let's look back 40yrs.
There was no taper Dec meet to make NCAA cuts.
Instead we ramped mileage in pool.
Brutal.
I my dad was a 42 y/o marathoner who ran a 2:41 marathon at age 40.
I told him we were doing 60 miles a week in pool. He first laughed and then got serious. You're kidding me.
Nope, that's what we were doing.
I had 6 Styrofoam cups frozen at all times. I would get done with workout and rub them on my shoulders each evening.
Swim, eat, class, rest, eat, swim, eat, sleep, repeat.
No garbage yardage everything for a purpose.
Yeah it sucked but the end results at NCAA championships was worth it.
The only thing that saved opening ceremonies of the Olympics is the athletes didn't see it!
They only saw the final swearing in as athletes, the flag ceremony and the lighting of the flame.
Thankfully they were on the river!
Disaster
Every Olympian has a story of when the beginning started, here's mine.
In 1972 my parents took me to the Olympics in Munich. We stayed with my god mother.
Didn't see swimming but a lot of other very notable events including the Hungarians playing Soviets in waterpolo (1)
(6) now who knows what holding that medal sparked but cool to think about.
It's now 40 years since my Olympic games. Still the last American to have won the 400m freestyle.
Just crazy when you think about it.
Olympic swim trials.
Go time
Up early head for breakfast.
As little walking as possible
Head to the pool.
Quick warm up, don't need much
Pace set
Out. Shower
Go get a massage
Relax, visualize race, chill
Last night before opening day Olympic swim trials.
Sleep is gonna be hard.
You're amped up already.
You've rested so there's just a ton of energy ready.
You've shaved down tonight
Sheets feel so good your body is tingling.
Good night and good luck
