"Dedication of UMMID Network to the Nation" programme at Mahika Auditorium Prithvi Bhawan
Dr. Madhulika Kabra, Professor Emeritus, @aiims_newdelhi, shared the achievements and success stories of the UMMID Initiative during the programme, highlighting its transformative impact on India’s genetic healthcare ecosystem.
From establishing dedicated training centres and building skilled manpower across states to strengthening newborn screening, prenatal diagnosis, and outreach in aspirational districts, the initiative is enabling early detection and preventive care for genetic disorders.
She highlighted that the programme has screened thousands of pregnant women and newborns, supported early diagnosis of treatable conditions, identified carrier couples for counselling, and helped prevent births affected by haemoglobin disorders through timely intervention.

"Dedication of UMMID Network to the Nation" programme at Mahika Auditorium Prithvi Bhawan
Hon’ble @DrJitendraSingh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Science & Technology and Ministry of Earth Sciences; Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office; and Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space, addressed the gathering during the “Dedication of UMMID Network to the Nation” programme.
Reflecting on the importance of the UMMID initiative, he spoke about inherited genetic disorders that often remain neglected due to limited awareness and their rare occurrence.
He highlighted that in a vast country like India, major healthcare priorities and resources are often directed towards more prevalent diseases, leaving rare disorders with comparatively lesser attention and support.
He appreciated the Department of Biotechnology (@DBTIndia) for taking the visionary step of launching a dedicated programme like UMMID, despite the challenges associated with rare disease management.
He also emphasised the importance of capacity building, awareness, and specialised training for the diagnosis and management of rare genetic disorders, reinforcing the government’s commitment towards inclusive and accessible healthcare.

"Dedication of UMMID Network to the Nation" programme at Mahika Auditorium Prithvi Bhawan
Dr. Ashwin Dalal, Senior Staff Scientist, @BRIC_CDFD, presented an overview of the UMMID Initiative during the programme, highlighting the growing global burden of genetic disorders and the need for accessible healthcare solutions.
The presentation focused on unique approaches for the management of inherited disorders, the financial and emotional impact on affected families, and the importance of early screening and diagnosis.
He also highlighted the outreach of the UMMID programme across 115 districts in India, including initiatives for screening pregnant women to enable early intervention and better healthcare outcomes.

Dedicated the #UMMID (Unique Methods of Management of Inherited Disorders) Programme for Rare Genetic Disorders/ Diseases to the Nation. Possibly the first of it's kind, the programme has been designed by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology.
My Address Takeaways:
"India is steadily entering an era where healthcare, diagnosis and treatment will increasingly become genome-based, precision-driven and individualized according to the genetic profile of every patient.
Inherited Rare Genetic Disorders or Diseases remained neglected for decades because diagnosis itself was difficult, treatment inaccessible and medicines either unavailable or prohibitively expensive, making it essential to build a coordinated national mechanism to make diagnosis and management feasible, affordable and accessible for all families.
Rare Genetic Disorders represent a silent but deeply challenging public health burden, where families often spend years moving from one hospital to another in search of diagnosis and treatment. Despite affecting comparatively smaller populations, these disorders impose enormous emotional, social and financial hardship on affected families.
UMMID is a major step towards mitigation of the ordeal of families affected by Rare Genetic Disorders , and in general also towards the future of precision medicine in India, the Minister said the initiative would also prepare the country’s healthcare ecosystem for the next generation of gene and genome-based medical care".

Dr. @rajesh_gokhale, Secretary, (@DBTIndia) , DG @BricDbt & Chairmen @BIRAC_2012, addressed the gathering during the “Dedication of UMMID Network to the Nation” programme, highlighting the significance of the UMMID initiative in identifying genetic disorders among newborns through collaborative science and partnerships.
Explaining the meaning and spirit behind the word “UMMID”, Dr. Rajesh Gokhale emphasised how the programme is bringing hope to families across India through early diagnosis and scientific intervention. He highlighted India’s diversity as a valuable strength for research and innovation, enabling scientific advancements that benefit society at large.
He shared that the UMMID initiative has expanded through 5 NIDAN Kendras, 7 outreach centres, and 6 clinical centres, benefiting nearly 2.7 lakh individuals who may not have otherwise received timely diagnosis and support.
Stressing the importance of taking such impactful programmes to larger national platforms, he congratulated all stakeholders for developing and strengthening this transformative initiative.
