Comedian Jerry Seinfeld, as he left Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday, declined to say “Free Palestine,” telling a streamer instead that Palestine “doesn’t exist.”

Rep. Omar pointed out what she viewed as a painful irony, saying that as a Jewish man whose people suffered through the Holocaust, Seinfeld should recognize the dangers of genocidal rhetoric aimed at wiping out or denying the existence of a whole group.

You see a news report about Israel doing something astonishingly evil in Lebanon, and there they are underneath it going "There's actually a lot more to the story because words words words words words words words."

You see some far right Israeli minister spouting nakedly genocidal rhetoric, and they're swarming all over it saying "Well this isn't actually what it looks like because words words words words words words words."

You see every major human rights group on earth saying Israel is guilty of genocide and apartheid, and they're running around frantically telling you it's a giant conspiracy to frame Israel and the truth is that words words words words words words words.

You see more and more mainstream news institutions reporting on the mountains of evidence of widespread rape and torture in Israeli prisons, and they saturate the airwaves claiming it's an antisemitic blood libel because words words words words words words words.

The idea is to just pound your intellect with a firehose of verbiage until your inner sensemaker has been shredded and you're too confused to form a coherent picture of what's actually going on. It's a disgusting, abusive, and profoundly unethical thing to do to people.

But the good news is it's not working anymore. Language is immensely powerful, but its power has its limits. Israel's behavior has become so transparently unacceptable that no amount of word magic can manipulate people into seeing anything other than what's happening in front of their face.

Pope Leo XIV said that a "truly just society" recognizes the dignity of every human life, as he made calls for peace in a wide-ranging address to the Spanish parliament on Monday.

"The defense of human life is neither a partisan issue nor a confessional interest: it is a goal of civilization," he said. "Every human life must be recognized and safeguarded from conception to its natural end, in every circumstance of its existence."

Leo added that "when this certainty is obscured" and the law fails to serve and protect everyone, society's most vulnerable people "are the first victims."

"For this reason, the moral greatness of a nation is manifested, above all, in its capacity to accompany, protect and love those lives that are most fragile," he said.

During the speech, the first by a pope to Spain's parliament, the pontiff urged global leaders to help migrants, calling on them to create "safe and legal pathways."

Leo also repeated his call for using dialogue instead of weapons to resolve disputes, saying "peace demands diplomatic courage." His comments came hours after Israel and Iran traded fire, threatening to upend peace efforts in the Middle East.

His address, which received a seven-minute standing ovation from Spanish lawmakers, was part of Leo's ongoing weeklong visit to Spain that included visits with migrants and victims of sexual abuse.
