People who conquer their battle with alcoholism are indeed heroes. My elder brother battled with it for years, constantly slipping back into old patterns, until he lost his fight a few years ago. At his burial, I learned that a few days before his passing, he had escaped his hospital bed to buy Uganda Waragi, a local gin.
Alcoholism wasn't just my brother's struggle; it affected my entire family, including my late father. The damage it does is huge and it is even evident in the many celebrities who have succumbed to this battle.
In 1980, the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, (DSM-3), recognized alcoholism as part of a bigger mental health disorder. The latest edition, DSM-5, now categorizes it as Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) or Substance Use Disorder (SUD), acknowledging it as a mental disorder with both physical and mental symptoms.
In our society like I recently wrote, there is a lack of understanding around mental health, which leads to misconceptions about disorders like alcoholism. This leads to the misconception that alcoholism is a choice, when in fact it is an illness that affects victims in every aspect of their lives - professionally, physically, emotionally, and financially.
The issue is worsened by the fact that the victims themselves, influenced by societal views, often fail to recognize their condition as an illness. This leads them further down a self destructive path, especially when they feel abandoned by friends and family.
If possible, before the situation deteriorates, please set a limit for yourself; maintain a healthy consumption level and adhere to it. Be your own police. Or work with a friend or "drink-mate" to monitor and support each other.
Please do something while you still can because once it turns into alcoholism, the journey back to sobriety is exceedingly difficult, and in many cases, impossible.
Take care!
