During the Easter season, ANAW with the support of Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE), engaged key stakeholders across the chicken value chain in Nakuru County to promote improved chicken welfare standards.
The engagement focused on promoting best practices in disease prevention and health management, ensuring appropriate stocking densities, enhancing biosecurity and biosafety measures, improving housing design and conditions, optimizing nutrition, and advocating for humane handling during transportation and slaughter.
Stronger practices mean healthier animals, safer food systems, and more sustainable livelihoods.

Did you know?
Every snare removed saves at least 10 animals from suffering or death.
ANAW, in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, recently rescued a giraffe at Kedong Ranch with a snare deeply embedded in its left front foot, causing severe injury and difficulty in movement.
Snaring and bushmeat poaching continue to pose a serious threat to wildlife, often leading to prolonged pain and death. Through timely rescue and treatment, we are helping reduce suffering and give animals a second chance.

As part of our ongoing anti-rabies campaign, ANAW, in collaboration with Machakos County Veterinary Services and with the support of QATO, is implementing an 8-day mass dog and cat vaccination drive in Kivaa Ward, Machakos County, targeting over 3,000 animals.
Rabies remains a serious public health concern. It is a preventable yet almost always fatal disease once symptoms appear, posing a significant risk to communities.
Mass vaccination is the most effective and sustainable strategy for breaking the transmission cycle of rabies. By increasing vaccination coverage, we not only protect animal health but also safeguard human lives and contribute to the global goal of eliminating rabies.
Together, we can create safer, healthier communities for all.

The ANAW rescue team, in collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Service, braved the rains at Aquila Farm to rescue a female zebra whose left hind limb had been trapped in a wire snare. The team promptly treated the injury, easing the animal’s pain and giving it a chance to recover.
Snares inflict immense suffering on wildlife, causing severe injuries, prolonged pain, and often death. This is why ANAW remains committed to raising awareness about the dangers of snaring, while also conducting regular de-snaring patrols to protect wildlife and safeguard their welfare.

ANAW held a public lecture at Chuka University, Tharaka Nithi County, focusing on chicken welfare. Approximately 150 students attended the session, where they were sensitised on proper chicken care, including housing, nutrition, health management, transportation, and humane slaughter practices.
The students were also educated on the importance of adopting humane and sustainable poultry production systems over battery cage systems, to improve the welfare of chickens as well as the quality and safety of eggs.

Capacity Building, Education & Awareness are key to advancing sustainable animal welfare—they tackle the root causes of animal suffering by strengthening knowledge, skills, systems & attitudes.
At ANAW, we equip coastal communities with practical sea turtle conservation skills through targeted training workshops, empowering local volunteers to protect nesting sites, reduce harmful practices & promote human–wildlife coexistence along Kenya’s South Coast. 🐢
Together, we’re building community-led solutions that secure a safer future for endangered sea turtles.

ANAW continues to collaborate with the Nakuru County Government to strengthen chicken welfare through inclusive policy development and capacity building.
Working alongside county leadership, legal teams and technical departments, we are reviewing and contextualising the Chicken Code of Practice to address welfare challenges across the entire chicken value chain.
In parallel, we are training farmers, transporters, marketers and slaughter personnel to uphold key welfare standards by supporting ethical, sustainable and welfare-conscious livestock production.

Happy International Volunteer Day! Celebrating the volunteers who give their time, skills and heart to drive real change. 🌍
On #IVD, we honor the power of volunteerism in advancing the 2030 Agenda.
Today’s #IVY2026 launch at the fringes of #UNEA7 brings together over 100 attendees in Nairobi—uniting environmental action with Kenya’s vibrant volunteer spirit as we gear up for impactful efforts in 2026.

ANAW, in partnership with United Nations Volunteers (UNV), launched the International Volunteer Year 2026 at the fringes of #UNEA7 under the theme “Volunteering for People and Planet: Every Contribution Matters.” 🌍
With 100+ participants, we highlighted the crucial role volunteers play in protecting animals, people and the environment. Every effort counts — and every contribution truly matters.

With support from Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), Africa Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW) partnered with Kenya Wildlife Service to successfully translocate Maasai giraffes and common zebras from Manera Farm in Naivasha to Nairobi National Park.
This vital conservation effort was driven by the shrinking habitats at Manera Farm, caused by the swelling Lake Naivasha and changes in land use that left the animals with limited browsing resources.
Wildlife conservation is key to preserving biodiversity, maintaining ecological balance, and ensuring the survival of species increasingly threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and human activity. Protecting wildlife means protecting the future of our planet.

Rabies remains a silent public health crisis, claiming about 2,000 lives in Kenya annually—mostly children. With proper awareness, vaccination, and preventive measures, these deaths are entirely avoidable.
" When you look at welfare, one of the key tools we use is the three freedoms framework, which highlights freedom from pain, injury and disease. That's where rabies comes in- we know how fatal it is once symptoms appear."
~Dr. Dennis Bahati ,Programs Director at ANAW

Policy advocacy is vital in raising animal welfare standards across Africa.
ANAW, in partnership with Nakuru County, is working to integrate the Code of Chicken Practice into the new Animal Welfare Act—ensuring proper care in production, transport, marketing & slaughter.
This milestone is made possible with support from ACE 💚

On 10th September, at the sidelines of the African Climate Summit 2 in Addis Ababa, ANAW, World Animal Protection, and partners convened a powerful side event ,themed “Animal Welfare and Climate Action: An Overlooked Link in the African Climate Agenda”.
The side event brought together panelists including representatives from World Animal Protection, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), African Union - InterAfrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), and The Donkey Sanctuary. From reducing emissions and biodiversity loss to preventing zoonotic diseases and improving farmer livelihoods, the panel explored how humane farming and climate action go hand in hand. It was established that there is a great need to focus on animal welfare in climate discussions and it should not be discussed as a stand alone issue.

ANAW recognizes that improving farm productivity goes hand in hand with upholding key welfare standards for both layers and broilers.
By engaging chicken farmers on the importance of proper housing, quality nutrition, effective disease management, responsible waste handling, and the provision of adequate perches and nesting areas, we help strengthen the wellbeing of chickens throughout their production cycle.
This important work has been made possible with the generous support of Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE).
