The Nigerian authorities must immediately and unconditionally release all those arrested from 1-10 August for exercising their right to peaceful assembly, instead of resorting to trumped-up charges just to justify the unlawful detention of the protesters.
Amnesty International is deeply concerned that the #EndBadGovernaceInNigeria protesters to be arraigned nationwide tomorrow are only going to be subjected to another round of government’s unrelenting intent to punish protesters and demonize protests.
Time is running out for Nigeria’s government to effectively perform its legal responsibility of protecting people’s lives, as gunmen on rampage daily ransack villages, kill people, abduct for ransom, rape women and destroy farm produce.

Twelve years since the Marikana massacre and still more than 100 people are yet to receive justice and reparations from the state leaving them in limbo. While some officers are facing charges for the events that took place before 16 August 2012, no police officer has been charged for the killing of 34 mine workers on that fateful day.
We need to continue demanding answers as to why it is taking more than a decade in the case of the Marikana massacre for there to be any prosecutions, and ultimately accountability for the brutal loss of life.
As @amnesty marks the 10th anniversary of the Arms Trade Treaty, we’re calling on states parties to urgently implement their obligations under this treaty and stop the transfer of arms to Israel.
