, UCI has been beleaguered by critics. Today, we let our work speak for itself. As our Executive Director, Dr. Jackson Orem, stated during the discharge of our first bone marrow transplant patient: -
This journey has been one of great uncertainty. While we are still within the clinical process, reaching this first-of-its-kind milestone is a major step forward. Together with the Board, we chose to share this moment with the public to show our progress.
For a long time-
Yesterday, I officially discharged Mr. Sande Stephen at UCI Mulago, Uganda’s FIRST bone marrow transplant patient treated on home soil. For decades, this cure meant selling land to go abroad. Today, we proved “Made in Uganda” care is world-class. Sickle cell cure is next.

Today, we concluded the Cancer Biology Summer School. Thank you to all participants and our trainers @CambridgeInsti, Cancer Research UK, @Makerere.
The participants were taught in cancer biology, bioinformatics, cancer immunology, immunotherapy among others.
We are hosting The Cancer Biology Summer School 2025, in partnership with Cambridge University. This is a five-day intensive training program designed to strengthen local and regional capacity in cancer research and clinical translation. This program addresses the urgent need for advanced knowledge in tumor biology, genetics, immuno-oncology, biomarkers, and emerging therapies, with the goal of improving cancer outcomes across Africa.
The summer school provides participants—including postgraduate students, early-career researchers, and clinicians—with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of cancer mechanisms while bridging the gap between research and clinical practice.
The program brings together experts from Cambridge University, faculty from the Uganda Cancer Institute, and international specialists in oncology, molecular biology, pharmacology, and translational medicine. Facilitators include senior scientists, oncologists, and experienced cancer researchers committed to mentorship and skills transfer.
Over the course of five days, participants will engage in lectures, hands-on workshops, case-based discussions, and networking sessions, fostering innovation and building sustainable collaborations in cancer research and clinical care.
