حقائق مدهشة عن شجرة الباوباب:

الأمطار نادرة والحرارة شديدة، ولا مصدر للماء إلا شجرة واحدة.

أحيانا يخزن لحاؤها السميك كمية هائلة من الماء قد تصل إلى 260 ألف لتر، فتنقذ الناس من الموت عطشا في مواسم الجفاف.

يحفرون التجاويف في جذع الشجرة يدويا بالأنجاد، في مهمة شاقة، تستغرق ما بين أسبوع إلى ثلاثة أسابيع. مع ذلك فإنها لا تموت، بل تتحمل وتتجدد، وبعد 7 أشهر تجف وتتعافى.

متوسط التخزين بين 5 آلاف و15 ألف لتر من ماء المطر، ومدخل الحفرة يجب أن يكون ضيقا جدا، لحمايتها من لصوص الماء.

الباوباب صديقة البشر، التي أنقذت قرى كاملة من المجاعات القاسية، منذ زمن طويل.

تنتقل مهارة الحفر من الأب إلى الابن، لكن لا يحفر الابن شجرته الأولى إلا بعد وفاة أبيه.

مع دخول الخزانات الحديثة، قد تختفي هذه العلاقة بين الباوباب والسكان إلى الأبد.
