The Boeing 747-8’s greatest tailstrike risk can emerge at the exact moment it needs to climb away.

On 10 October, Lufthansa flight LH456 executed a dramatic go-around at Los Angeles. As the nose pitched sharply upward, the tail of the enormous jet appeared to pass within inches of the runway, yet no contact occurred.

The engineering challenge lies in the 747-8’s long fuselage. At low altitude, even a modest increase in pitch can rapidly reduce the clearance beneath the tail. Meanwhile, its four GEnx engines need time to spool up to go-around thrust, while the extended landing gear and flaps create substantial drag.

That leaves a critical transition: generate enough thrust, establish a safe climb and avoid excessive rotation. Tailstrike protection helps limit over-rotation, but precise aircraft control remains essential.
