The propaganda campaign against Somaliland, led by actors aligned with Turkey, Qatar, and Somalia continues unabated, even during the holy month of Ramadan. This latest fabrication, appearing in Bloomberg and Middle East Eye, alleges that Somaliland is hosting or planning an Israeli military base to target Iran and Yemen’s Houthi militants.

These narratives are constantly shifting. Earlier claims suggested Israel’s recognition of Somaliland was linked to displacing Palestinians from Gaza to our country, a baseless rumor that quickly fell apart when no evidence emerged. When that failed to gain traction, the story pivoted to this new allegation of a military base aimed at regional adversaries!

The reports rely on anonymous or dubious sources without faces and names, including claims of “two Somaliland officials” speaking off the record. Such assertions are entirely unfounded. The Government of Somaliland does not conduct sensitive bilateral discussions through informal channels or make high-level strategic decisions accessible to unofficial voices.

As of today, no official agreement or arrangement for an Israeli military base exists, and previous official statements from Somaliland have consistently denied such plans. Ergo, the intention here appears to be a coordinated effort to damage Somaliland’s reputation, undermine its growing international partnerships (following Israel’s historic recognition in December 2025), and potentially incite hostility from groups like the Houthis or Iran amid ongoing regional tensions.

We call on Bloomberg (@business) and Middle East Eye to issue an immediate retraction and correction of this unsubstantiated story, uphold basic journalistic standards grounded in solid facts, and verify claims before publication especially when they risk escalating instability in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea region. Somaliland remains committed to peace, stability, and legitimate partnerships that benefit its people and the broader region. Fabricated hit pieces will not deter that path.
