Happy faces at the end of the ABRIC-FARDWO cruise onboard #RVGarciaDelCid 😃
A huge THANKS to the VLIZ Team (@VLIZnews) and their "toys" for making this happen, as well as to our colleagues at @ICMCSIC for their awesome support. We've got astonishing data, stay tuned! 😊
#AUV Barabas was the workhorse of our 10 day cruise! 190 km travelled and 2164 min on mission during 12 dives in Cap de Creus, Palamos and Blanes Canyons. Promising first results.. Thanks to great crew of #RVGarciaDelCid (@utm_csic), In team:

High-energy events such as #storms, and river floods often increase water turbidity and suspended sediment transport in #submarine canyons. @RyanInstitute @nuigalway report on this and possible future impacts of human activities on #waterbodies. Find 👉 https://t.co/ClpFcQRCRM
Bottom trawling also affects submarine canyons in the Sicilian margin: sedimentation rates have increased since the onset of bottom trawling in these canyons by an order of magnitude!
New paper by researchers from our team: @paradiss1@peremasque and more!
New paper by Sarah Paradis @paradiss1 Evidence of large increpases in sedimentation rates due to fish trawling in submarine canyons of the Gulf of Palermo (SW Mediterranean) https://t.co/ZCvk0AYRg7
Submarine #canyons can serve as hotspot areas of sediment and organic carbon #accumulation, or as incinerators/bypass of sediment and organic carbon towards deeper environments (abyss/trenches/other)❓ 🤔 What do you think?
Shout-out to @INCISE_net community‼️📢
💡 For those who wonder, this is not an ordinary saw. This is a #ultrasoniccutter. It vibrates its blade at high frequency, and because of its movement, this device can easily cut the PVC tubes that hold the sediments inside, sharply and cleanly! 💪
⛴️ #Day10 ...and last!
Hard work today on the R/V #RamonMargalef 💪
We retrieved a total of 4 #gravitycores!
Wanna know how we cut them before bringing them to the lab? Keep reading 🧐👀⬇️
🛳️#Day9: Sediment sampling!
Good start of the week 💪Today we've been retrieving sediment samples with a #gravitycorer.
⬇️Here, senior and young researchers are measuring, cutting, and labeling a #gravitycore. Everything's ready for lab analyses.
💡A #parasound system is a high-resolution sediment #echosounder that is able to penetrate the topmost meters of the seafloor. It is used to identify and evaluate #lithological variations as well as sediment layers in deep-sea sediment sequences.
🛳️#Day8: Parasound profiles!
You know it's Sunday when you feel that nice smell of 🥐🥐onboard! But hey, work doesn't stop 💪
Today, we've been acquiring #parasoundprofiles.
Wanna know more? Read below ⬇️👀
💡#Multibeam#echosounders emit sound waves in a fan shape beneath a ship's hull. The time it takes for the sound waves to bounce off the seabed and return to a receiver is used to determine water depth.
