With Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern submitting a new set of data detailing the expected outcome of their merger, the STB must closely scrutinize these submissions. The STB’s UP-NS merger discovery process is underway. A close examination of the facts will show that further rail consolidation will raise prices for American consumers and small businesses.

Ohio State Senator Patton's reversal reflects what shippers, workers, and consumers have concluded after reviewing the facts: the UP-NS mega-merger means less competition, fewer routing options, and more power in the hands of the rail giants.
Ohio State Senator Thomas Patton has formally withdrawn his support for the proposed UP-NS merger.
After reviewing the record, Senator Patton concluded the transaction could reduce competitive transportation options for shippers, disrupt service, and harm rail-dependent communities across Ohio.
The more stakeholders learn about this merger, the more opposition grows. Read his letter below:
If the proposed UP-NS rail mega-merger is approved, everyday Americans will bear the consequences. In Portland, for example, residents are expecting a 22% increase in train traffic, which could exacerbate existing problems for the city. The STB must analyze the impact of this merger on consumers and businesses across the country.

Labor unions, Attorneys General, farmers, and consumers are all voicing their concerns over the UP-NS mega-merger. The railroad’s flawed application overstates its benefits while ignoring serious concerns about service disruptions and higher prices for businesses and consumers. The STB must fully consider the harms of further freight rail consolidation.

STB’s request for additional information underscores the continued lack of transparency and calls into question the completeness and credibility of the entire proposal.” Learn more: https://t.co/UgvuOEhIkR
