This is a less well-known piece of the RFT framework, but it explains something important about how values work psychologically, and why they're so much more powerful than simple goal-setting.
Augmenting refers to verbal processes that change how motivating or meaningful something is, by altering how it's related to other things we care about. In plain language, it's how framing something in a particular way changes how important it feels to us.
Here's a concrete example: if you're about to make a difficult phone call you've been avoiding, and you connect that phone call to "I'm someone who shows up for people even when it's hard," the task feels different than if it's just "another thing on my list." The behavior is the same; the augmented meaning is what changes its motivational pull. This is part of why values work is so central to what we do in ACT.

Something genuinely exciting landed in the Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science.
My colleagues and I put three methods for personalizing treatment head to head, and one finding keeps sticking with me: 61% of participants with trichotillomania showed completely unique combinations of the processes driving their behavior. This is exactly why "one size fits all" keeps falling short.
The method we developed, tsBoruta, identifies which psychological processes are actually relevant for a specific person while minimizing false positives, because chasing irrelevant targets in therapy wastes time neither the clinician nor the client has.

Being highly self-critical is bad for your health. When we're at war w/ ourselves or parts of ourselves, our threat detection system is in a constant state of activation, which leads to increased stress levels, which are linked to a range of negative health outcomes.
Thriving in mid-life isn't necessarily about changing your life circumstances. It's about connecting with inner qualities you may have lost touch with. Here's how to get started. https://t.co/h8okmLH72R
You’re not just one thing. 🌟
In ACT, we challenge the myth of the 'Big I'—the global identity we cling to. You’re a mix of unique, intricate little 'i's. 💡
When that inner critic speaks up, remind yourself: You’re so much more.
