At the #UNSC, @Metra_Mehran warns that political engagement with the Taliban must not come at the expense of the rights, dignity and participation of women and girls in #Afghanistan.
Delivering strong and clear recommendations for the renewal of @UNAMAnews’s mandate, @Metra_Mehran urged the #UNSC to ensure that UNAMA remains firmly grounded in human rights and prioritizes the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security (#WPS) agenda across all its work.
She emphasized the need for the full, equal, meaningful, and safe participation of women in all UN-led political processes, stronger protection and promotion of women’s rights and gender equality, enhanced human rights monitoring and reporting, effective measures to prevent and respond to gender-based violence, and support for Afghanistan’s compliance with its international human rights obligations, including CEDAW.
At a time when women and girls in Afghanistan face systematic repression and exclusion, these priorities must remain at the center of UNAMA’s renewed mandate.

Halima*-a blind teacher-lost her classroom, income & rights after 2021. On #HumanRightsDay, we honour her—and insist their dignity isn’t forgotten. From closing centres 4 blind girls to banning womens education & work, Taliban decrees amount to gender apartheid @Metra_Mehran
Taliban has criminalized womanhood for 4 years, but U.S. still has no official foreign policy on Afghanistan. As Congress returned from recess and the UN Security Council meets tomorrow, here I outline foreign policy options for Washington to act.

Law as weapon. Law as resistance. In this new piece, CEP fellow @SaidyWisna unpacks how the Taliban uses law to entrench gender apartheid—and why documenting it is urgent. Syria shows how such evidence can help deliver justice.
