@SimonCalder Thought we could finally get an ESTA as our trip to Socotra (Yemen, so on the list) had timed out. But we also went to Cuba in 2015. So back to requiring a visit to Madrid from our home in Barcelona to get a visa if we want to go to the states.

@tamthebam999 @SpiritByNature @davidschneider There is no reason as a resident not to have a NIE unless you have been playing the system for years to avoid paying taxes in Spain. It allows you to have public healthcare and you are treated equally when it comes to vaccinations.

@tamthebam999 @SpiritByNature @davidschneider All you need to stay in Spain is a NIE (social security number) which anyone who became a resident from an EU country resident should already have.
That is all. You need to do nothing else to stay. No hoops to jump through, no need to apply for anything.
