I gave a lecture to my virology class this Fall about the history of the pandemic through the lens of viral genotypes.
I thought I would share that lecture as a thread.

There are 14 ongoing COVID outbreaks at #Ottawa hospitals where in past two weeks hospitalized numbers (106 currently) have increased by 165%. Clearly we need more hand washing there. I mean what else could we possibly do?

Case numbers aren't reliable anymore, but wastewater and hospitalizations are still informative. (I used wastewater in Ontario and hospitalizations in the UK as 100% correct early predictors for several waves in Canada).

On this day in 1916, Ota Benga, an African native who suffered inhumane treatment by being kept in a zoo, committed suicide.
He had been kidnapped in 1904 from Congo, and taken to America and exhibited at the Bronx Zoo with monkeys.
