Whenever I think of Wink I always want the story of how it got its name to be romantic, like a cowboy winked at a yella-haired lady at a dance, not realizing that she was the fiance' of another cowboy, who saw the wink, drunkenly challenged the first cowboy to a duel, and lost, leaving the first cowboy with the pretty maiden. Sadly, for both you and me dear Texans, the story is much more sanguine. Wink was named for Winkler County, where it is located. Townspeople originally applied for "Winkler" but the Post Office said there already was a Winkler so the folks there changed it to Wink. No drunken cowboy, no yella-haired lady.
