During my https://t.co/zANOEvvHvH, most of us had no idea what caste our batchmates belonged to. Many of my close friends were SC/ST. We never discussed it. It never entered any conversation or decision. Not once. Our exposure to the humanities department was limited, though — the term "Brahmanical patriarchy" didn't even exist back then.

As a teacher, I don't ask a student's name before solving their doubt. Often I don't know their name at all — some of my classes have 300+ students. We treat them all the same. So does every colleague I know. So did every professor who taught me.

Social media has now filled vulnerable students' heads with a lot of manufactured grievance about caste discrimination that, in my experience, doesn't exist.

As a woman, I have been the recipient of unconscionable sexual slurs. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve been called a “randi”. I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard someone say that I must have slept my way up.

I am shocked that a woman would normalise the slur and claim she’s a “proud randi” - a slur used to delegitimise women, their accomplishments and their dignity. There’s no pride in being called a prostitute. No. You cannot say “prostitution is also a respectable profession and therefore, being called that shouldn’t be a slur”. It is a slur. It’s not a respectable profession. Selling yourself like a commodity is not “respectable”. Yes. It could be a result of desperate times for some, or violent flesh trade for others. But it’s not a “respectable profession”. It turns women into commodities.

Some would say that being called a “Randi” is to shame women for being promiscuous - and there’s nothing wrong with being promiscuous. There is. Women and young girls who think promiscuity is ‘no big deal’ do so because someone like this influenza, who they look up to, made it seems synonymous with freedom. Devaluation of oneself isn’t freedom. It’s a prison. It’s a cage. It’s emotional purgatory where young girls view themselves as worthless meat and the validation of whorish men as trophy. Stability eludes them, mostly forever. They discard the value of true, lifelong companionship at the altar or this “freedom” not because they believe in it, but as a cope. It’s a spiral that women like @DivijaBhasin are pushing young girls into.

But this debate aside, it is shocking to me that a dehumanising slur is being normalised, even taken pride in. Women need to fight such slurs, not make young women feel it’s a badge of honour. The men who throw such slurs around as a point of disagreement are basically saying that apart from a being a bed warmer, women have no ‘utility’. And to influence children into taken pride in being called a piece of meat?

This influenza is sacrificing the dignity of young women because she gets to rage bait, then play victim and in the entire process, get 5 minutes of fame and some clicks. Absolutely abhorrent.
