Mesopotamia was never the cradle of civilisation. India was.

I spent forty years in international shipping, not academia. When I began researching the history of maritime trade, I had no orthodoxy to defend. I followed the evidence, and it kept arriving in the same place: the Indian subcontinent.

Nineteenth century archaeologists dug in Mesopotamia because the climate preserved artefacts, the biblical sources pointed them there, and the Ottomans allowed the excavations. That is the entire basis for the myth of Mesopotamia as "the cradle of civilisation."

Nobody applied the same rigour to India. Mohenjo-daro was not discovered until 1922. By then the narrative had already hardened.

What was actually there was the largest civilisation of the ancient world. Three hundred cities. Fifty thousand people in each, by 2600 BC. Two thirds of them stood on the banks of the Sarasvati, the central and greatest of the seven rivers described in the Rig Veda, flowing down from the Himalayas before the river vanished entirely by 1900 BC. The Vedic kings claimed territory stretching "sea to sea," from Afghanistan to Maharashtra, some 1.5 million square miles, against Egypt's 13,000. A dock at Lothal built to handle thirty ships of sixty tons, unmatched in Europe for four thousand years. When it was first excavated, it was recorded as a bathing pool.

When the scale became impossible to dismiss, the theory was not corrected. It was replaced with a story of pale-skinned nomads from the steppe who supposedly arrived around 1500 BC and brought civilisation with them. There is no evidence. The chronology doesn't work. The Vedas describe no invasion.

In 2019 a Harvard-led genetic study revived the claim, and the press reported it as confirmation. It was not. The same study found the builders of these cities were indigenous. The Sarasvati river that the Rig Veda described had already dried up before these newcomers arrived. What the study also found is that a small group of men, arriving after the Sarasvati had already dried up, interbred with the existing population and left a genetic signature. That is all.

So, where they chose to dig was mostly an accident of climate and access. The Aryan invasion theory was constructed because an Indian civilisation that owed nothing to Caucasians was a fact the late nineteenth century could not accommodate.

The Hindutva project was never about religion. It was always about the use of religion to seize political power.

In 1980 when AB Vajpayee and others founded the @BJP4India, the party’s motto was “Gandhian Socialism.” But “Gandhian Socialism” was a failure at the ballot box and the BJP kept losing elections through the 1980s.

The 1984 General Elections when the @INCIndia surged to over 400 seats ( post Indira Gandhi’s assassination) saw the BJP consigned to near oblivion, winning just 2 seats. Vajpayee lost his own seat.

Two years later in 1986 LK Advani became BJP president, and, searching desperately for a way to win elections and fight the then mighty Congress, Advani lit upon an age -old local dispute around a small UP masjid, ( the Babri Masjid) which the VHP was already mobilising.

The highly astute Advani immediately saw that this “Ram Janmabhoomi” agitation had the potential to become a “people’s movement,” to carry the BJP to power.

The BJP’s ideological and electoral pivot from “Gandhian Socialism” to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement reshaped Indian politics. Vajpayee was consigned to the edges of the Hindutva steam bath but remained its “acceptable” face. The rest is of course history.

40 years in shipping gave me one unusual qualification as a historian: I had no academic orthodoxies to protect.

When I began researching the history of maritime trade, I followed the sea lanes backwards into deep antiquity. Without exception, they converged on the Indian subcontinent. This was not the book I had intended to write.

I must give credit to my editor, who gave an unknown author with a controversial approach, an opportunity. His first attempts to find peer reviewers encountered significant resistance. The argument that India sat at the centre of ancient world trade, not its periphery, was considered, to put it gently, inconvenient.

What I found, and what I could not stop finding, is that placing India at the centre of world history does not simply revise one chapter. It cascades. Correct the starting assumption and you are forced to reconsider the origins of mathematics, medicine, philosophy, linguistics, religion. Each conclusion leads to another. I came to call these the collateral heresies.

My three books explain the architecture of how they connect.

If you work in a field where received wisdom is protected by institutional interest rather than evidence, you will recognise the pattern. The question is whether the evidence eventually wins.

⚠️🇮🇳 A Hyderabad supplier forged 199 test reports for Tejas Mk1A components.

HAL caught it during routine quality checks and filed an FIR on June 2.

Here is what happened:

• Tec Aero Devices supplied components across 18 purchase orders from 2022 to 2023
• Tests for tensile strength, hardness, NDT and salt spray were all faked
• The supplier even sent HAL an apology letter admitting two wrong reports then HAL audited and found all 199 were forged
• The actual lab named on the reports confirmed its name and signatures were stolen and misused
• HAL debarred the firm for 3 years and filed a criminal case

India is building a fighter jet for its frontline air force.

One corrupt supplier with fake paperwork can ground that entire programme.

This is not just fraud. It is a national security failure

This programme is already delayed by over 2 years.

It is fighting engine shortages, software delays and now a supplier that was faking safety critical test data for a combat aircraft.
