Is street-level gun violence becoming normalized in Bangladesh?

In Gendaria, Dhaka, 20 to 25 armed attackers arrived in a residential alley near a mosque and railway line, ordered shops shut, cut power to the area, smashed CCTV cameras, and opened fire indiscriminately. A tea stall owner, a fast-food worker pulling down a shutter, and a young woman standing in front of her home were caught in the crossfire and shot.

This isn't an isolated incident. Across Bangladesh, public spaces are turning into battlegrounds:

- Chattogram: A Jubo Dal leader was shot dead in broad daylight at a busy market in Raozan by assailants arriving in autorickshaws.
- Khulna: Armed assailants opened fire inside a mosque during Fajr prayers, alongside routine gang-related street executions.
- Dhaka: Frequent neighborhood shootouts over drug turf and extortion, where illegal pistols are drawn as casually as arguments.

When market intersections, local tea stalls, and worship places become venues for open gunfire, we have to ask: When did public terror become a daily background noise?

If pulling down a shop shutter or standing at your doorstep can land you in a hospital with a bullet wound, the issue isn't just crime; it's the collapse of basic public security.

How can citizens feel safe when the streets belong to armed gangs?
