The United States did not “acquire Greenland.”

The U.S. has already had extensive military access to Greenland under the 1951 Defence Agreement. That framework already provided for U.S. military facilities and the establishment of additional defence areas by agreement.

The new agreement builds on that existing framework. One of its new elements is that non-NATO countries will not be allowed to establish military bases or maintain a troop presence in Greenland.

Military access is not ownership.

When Quebec had their unsuccessful independence votes they lost investment and the province has not recovered even decades after the last no vote. Heck, they even lost their own national bank.

Alberta will fare similiarly; even if the government cancelled the referendum vote today, the damage has already been done.
