Thanks to all who’ve shared their disgust after @VeoliaUK mowed grassland full of breeding birds including Red-listed Skylarks, Linnets & Corn Buntings - against advice from @Natures_Voice. CONFIRMED: @metpoliceuk visited Rainham to gather info, @EnvAgency on case too

Diary 14/5/21: Damp night, dull morning, balmy sun from 2.15, dulling at eventide. Pearl-bordered Fritillary coming out strongly, including a white one (Ab. Pallida) and a straw-coloured one (Ab. Stramineus), doubling my life tally of PBF aberrations!
The Daubeney area of Hackney, East London was made glyphosate-free a year ago. In this single street, I counted 62 plant species of 26 families. 75% of British insects feed on a *single* plant family. Just imagine how much wildlife a street like this can support... #MoreThanWeeds
Martin White, whose story is told in this long read, devoted his life to reviving lost nature. Many people disagree with his work. Others may recognise our world would be less beautiful without his efforts. Very sadly, he passed away yesterday. https://t.co/pUSKzTL07p
The in your face, beauty of Merveille du Jour and the subtle beauty of
Large Wainscot. Two of my favourite autumnal moths. Both taken last night in my Northants garden.
A little miniature landscape my son spotted growing on an old wooden fence post. From our walk home from school in New Mills earlier.

Colonisation of NL on community level by the Southern Small White (P mannii). The map indicates the first year with an observation. The main direction of expansion was more north than west. Still some gaps though.
This male Southern Small White (P mannii) is the first from one of the Frisian Waddenislands north of mainland NL. It's actually the most remote one, 25km NW of the mainland. This shows they can cross over sea, and more or less completes the colonisation of NL. Photo: Ben Gaxiola
Today, without notice, #HS2 have taken possession of our Calvert Jubilee nature reserve. They will now destroy decades of hard work by @BBOWT staff & volunteers who have made it a haven for wildlife. This is a sad day for us, and for all who fought to save this special place.
The rare Rosy Underwing (Catocala electa) has been sighted at a railway station in Cornwall, only the second time one has been seen in Cornwall in almost 150 years. https://t.co/dj7egUFrp0

Did you know that we have 1,000,000 insects in the Entomology Collections @Museum_Cardiff? These are used in research, exhibitions, workshops and training the next generation of entomologists! #AskACurator

2020 was the hottest summer on record in the Northern Hemisphere. As the Siberian ground thaws, we are seeing faces that have been locked in the permafrost since the ice age. Cave bear, cave lion cub, Pleistocene wolf, Lena horse foal. What next? Photos from The Siberian Times.
For many years I have been growing Nicotiana with not a lot of success or it flowers too early. This year I got it right and was rewarded with my first ever Convolvulus Hawk-moth. Hoping to get better pictures tonight.
