After Yala, where mammals competed for our attention, our epic #srilanka tour ended at Sinharaja. There were so many highlights, especially Sri Lanka Spurfowl, nesting Sri Lanka Frogmouth and roosting Serendib Scops Owl. What. A. Place! #travel#SriLanka2025#sustainabletourism
On a forested hill at Belihuloya, Treehouse Chalets is off the beaten track in #srilanka. It's home to Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Sri Lankan Shama, Fork-tailed Drongo-Cuckoo & the stunning Indian Pitta (pictured), with mammals including Indian Giant Flying Squirrel & Toque Macaque
From Colombo, our #srilanka trip with @Jetwing_Eco headed east, adding Tickell's Blue Flycatcher and more in the grounds of Moksha @ Kitulgala, then onto Nuwara Eliya, where the many highlights included Forest Wagtail, Kashmir Flycatcher and Brown Shrike
@srilankatourism
Great to be working with @Jetwing_Eco on my return to #srilanka, endemic bird hotspot & all-round spectacular destination. The fun begins in Colombo with the endemic Red-backed Flameback, Red-wattled Lapwing, Indian Paradise-Flycatcher & a monster Water Monitor! @srilankatourism

Watching any diver in #London is a treat, but to see Black-throated and Great Northern Divers together just metres away today was a unique experience.
Keeping a low profile at KGV Reservoir allowed these birds to approach and feed without disturbance ๐

The last outing of 2024 produced a pair of Firecrests on my Alexandra Park patch here in inner #London. No camera with me today, so here's one I photographed previously, also in the park. Happy New Year to family, friends and fellow birders everywhere!

Incredibly alarming news about some of the world's well-known shorebirds - we'll be publishing more on what's happening to these and other species flagged up in the latest @IUCN#RedList in the next issue of BirdLife magazine, available to supporters and partners in December
๐จRed List Update๐จ
Migratory shorebird populations are plummeting globally. โ ๏ธ ๐
16 species have been reclassified to higher threat categories, with potential causes including habitat loss and degradation, disturbance, hunting and climate change. ๐
๐ Travelling the world on migration routes called flyways, shorebirds are a familiar sight worldwide.
Protecting shorebirds is vital for all of us. ๐ The places migratory birds stop and rest on their long journeys are important for millions of people.
CBD COP16 is the moment to galvanise action to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030. ๐ค

It's a privilege to edit @BirdLife magazine, commission writers such as @JLowenWildlife & @Callahanbirder, and work with @tophsands, @martinBirdLife & others to spread the word about our vital work.
There are many ways you can support @BirdLife_News too: https://t.co/W9hzqEQAji
Across the world, the @BirdLife_News partnership is saving key sites from manifold threats. My feature for the Oct-Dec issue of BirdLife magazine, edited by @birdingetc, celebrates important recent success stories - and some imperilled places where vital work remains in train.
