Below is a message I shared yesterday with my team. These are raw, painful days; the tip of a bitter reality has again poked through our national veneer. I wonder if this time a change is gonna come.
Equal justice under the law—not too much to ask. Shouldn’t even be an “ask” at all, it’s a constitutional right that must be demanded and insisted upon by all for all.
Horacio, my husband & man of color took this photo at a non-violent protest in Harlem yesterday. We must have #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd! I believe deeply that If we teach EVERYONE emotional intelligence, ethics, & history (accurately!) structural racism will end. #BlackLivesMatter
During remote learning, relationships with students can and must be protected and nourished. It requires more planning and intention, but don’t let it be an obstacle. Things just got harder and worse for our kids; those relationships are as important now as ever. @Camelot_Ed
Coronavirus has moved all the furniture around; what before was impossible is suddenly possible- where did we find $2 trillion? Let’s do better than returning to the status quo ante. Educational equity at last? @The74 @Camelot_Ed

These are difficult times for everyone, and heart-breaking times for far too many. Especially now, I couldn’t be more proud of our team—supporting students and each other. Thank you. This felt like a pick-me-up, and I wanted to share it with you: https://t.co/lHpO5HJ35M
Relationships are the pipes through which teaching and learning flow. Connection and trust turn buildings into sacred places. Thank you @PhillyREC440 for your partnership and support, and thank you @caselorg for your work that supports the work of many.
One of our partner programs @Camelot_Ed is celebrating SEL Day with testimonies from current students and alumni. Camelot’s school model includes socio-emotional learning daily even in accelerated schools like Philadelphia’s Excel Academies #SELDay
@DAdams_SEL@pureedgeinc@DrKellWill If I knew then what I know now... I would have been less reluctant to start a hard conversation. Difficult conversations are just as important for developing healthy and lasting relationships as are the pleasant ones. (True for students and adults.)

Great kickoff today with our partners at Rochester City SD @RCSD_DSE . Powerful collaboration and teamwork as we work together to build a school culture of engagement, meaning and belonging for all kids. #RCSDInclusionRevolution
A survey of 21K students, @YaleEmotion @marcbrackett found 75% of students’ self-reported feelings related to school were negative. An intentional school culture that celebrates & emphasizes relationships opens doors for authentic student engagement. #socialemotionallearning
In a survey of over 21,000 US high school students, @marcbrackett, @ZoranaPsych, and colleagues found that most of their days are spent “tired, stressed, and bored.” Read more >> https://t.co/RhBeGG3OBK

On this day of remembrance, it is not sufficient only to remember. Our past is not behind us, but lives among us still. There is hard work still to be done right now. In his last days, MLK, Jr. was focused not only on racial equality, but also economic justice.
5th graders’ academic success can depend on the number of words they hear from 0-3. #BooksforBabies encourages young parents to read to their babies, and can help reduce the language exposure gap. https://t.co/DjOi6XPo51
We couldn’t be more excited to see CASEL President & CEO Karen Niemi spreading the word about #SEL in her keynote for the UN Women for Peace Association! @unwfpa@YaleEmotion
It was great to be with so many talented educators and advocates for children this morning at the Far South CAC’s 7th Annual Principals Appreciation Breakfast. Thank you to Joyce Chapman for her steadfastness and for her passion. @ChiPubSchools @Camelot_Ed
Saw this graphic today and it makes my heart hurt. Sure some time in “processing” is to be expected, but that can’t explain these numbers. Have you read @thenewjimcrow ?@Camelot_Ed
