When a young person is struggling, feeling alone, hopeless, or like they don't belong, it can have a serious impact on their mental health. Some children openly express that they're in pain, while others may keep their feelings hidden from family and friends.
Parents sometimes worry that asking about suicide could put the idea in a child's head, but mental health research emphasizes that the opposite is true. Talking openly about suicide and taking a child's feelings seriously helps them feel safer, understood, and supported. For some children, that conversation can be lifesaving.
It's also important to remember that comments about wanting to die, feeling like a burden, or not belonging should never be dismissed. If a child mentions thoughts of death or suicide, take them seriously and create space for a calm, compassionate conversation.
Some warning signs can include withdrawing from friends and family, mood changes, changes in sleep or eating habits, reckless behavior, or talking about feeling trapped or hopeless. Recognizing these signs early can help families get support when it's needed most.
If you or someone you know needs immediate help, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

This week saw the launch of the #DPIJournalism Fellowship for Eastern Africa hosted by @LetsCoDevelop & @cipesaug. This inaugural cohort of 20 fellows emerged from a rigorous selection process. They represent 9 countries (🇹🇿🇰🇪🇺🇬🇷🇼🇧🇮🇪🇹🇸🇴🇸🇸🇨🇩) in the region and who work across online, broadcast, and print platforms. The six month fellowship aims to close that gap by building the capacity of the media to cover #DPI in ways that create awareness and informed public discourse on digital governance.
