FG DRAGS NARD TO ANOTHER AVOIDABLE STRIKE

Summary of NARD Extraordinary National Executive Council (e-NEC) Meeting today April 4, 2026 virtually

PREAMBLE

The National Executive Council (NEC) was informed about the Federal Government's (FG) decision to remove the Professional Allowance Table (PAT), a development deemed unfortunate.

RESOLUTION

Following extensive deliberations on this matter, the NEC decided to Embark on a Total Industrial and Comprehensive Strike beginning at 12am on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

Our Demands:

1. Reversal of the decision to cease the implementation of the PAT starting in April, 2026

2. Immediate payment of promotion arrears and salary arrears for specific centers.

3. Prompt conclusion of the process of paying of the 2026 MTRF.

4. Immediate processing and payment of outstanding 19 months' arrears of the Professional Allowance PAT.

The NARD leadership calls on its members to unite in the fight against this injustice and seek the to pursue it to a logical conclusion.

We are still stuck on CONMESS 2014.

The notification from the Association of Resident Doctors at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, announcing the resumption of their indefinite strike, is deeply concerning. It reflects the government’s continued failure to meet its obligations to frontline healthcare workers.

Despite repeated reminders and clear agreements, the Kaduna State government has failed to pay 100% of CONMESS 2024 as promised, and no adjustments were made to August salaries. This is not just a breach of trust with the doctors but a serious threat to the health and well-being of ordinary citizens who rely on these hospitals.

Governor @ubasanius and his administration must understand that the welfare of healthcare workers is directly linked to the quality of healthcare delivery. Ignoring these demands is unacceptable and risks creating a full-scale health crisis in the state.

The people of Kaduna deserve better. The government must act immediately to resolve this matter before it escalates further.

URGENT NOTICE: RESUMPTION OF SUSPENDED STRIKE BY ARD KADUNA

As of midnight on August 31, 2025, the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) Kaduna State will resume its indefinite strike action.

Prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease and the Latest Data in Nigeria.......

National Estimate (Meta‑Analysis)

A 2023 meta-analysis of 10 community-based studies on 7,010 Nigerians found chromic kidney disease prevalence at approximately15.4% and further analysed that, about 17.8 million adults are living with the condition.

Regional Variability

Population based studies in Nigeria show chronic kidney disease rates ranging from 2.5% up to 26%, depending on region and measurement method.

Kwara State Urban Survey

A study among approximately 1,350 urban adults in Kwara (North-Central Nigeria) found age-adjusted chronic kidney disease prevalence of 12%, defined by eGFR <60 ml/min or proteinuria. Risk factors were mostly diabetes, obesity, proteinuria, older age, female sex.

Rural Anambra State Community Data

In rural Anambra, a community survey of approximately 391 persons reported chronic kidney disease prevalence of 10.7% while 6.6% had reduced kidney function; 7.9% had albuminuria.

Why It Matters

Chronic kidney disease often progresses silently. Most don't know until late stages.
About 90% of dialysis patients in Nigeria die within 3 months if unresolved.
Major risk factors include hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and herbal remedy misuse.

What You Can Do

-Get screened if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or obesity.
-Ask for kidney function tests.
-Maintain healthy lifestyle, limit herbal mixtures or NSAIDs without prescription.

Nigeria’s women footballers deserve our congratulations for winning the 2024 WAFCON. The Federal Government rewarded each of the 24 players with the naira equivalent of US$100 000 and each of the 11 coaches with US$50 000; it also promised a national honour and three bedroom apartments, bringing the cash gift to about ₦4.602 billion. The Nigerian Governors’ Forum added another ₦350 million. While celebrating our heroines, it is worth reflecting on what this money means in a country struggling to retain doctors, teachers and other essential workers.

Daily Trust calculated that the same amount could cover a month’s salary for roughly 16 000 doctors or 66 000 teachers—precisely the professionals whose welfare governments cite as “unaffordable”. Many government employed doctors earn between ₦200 000 and ₦250 000 a month. and must cope with rising living costs which drives the brain drain crisis. Teachers and police officers are in a similar predicament; the same ₦4 billion could pay the lowest ranked police officers for a month.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government still owes 2023–2024 accoutrement allowance arrears, upwardly revised CONMESS salary arrears and is yet to fully disburse the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund. NARD has repeatedly asked for immediate payment of these arrears and for salary adjustments reflecting the 2019 and 2024 minimum wage increases. Resident doctors also remain excluded from the specialist allowance scheme.

Our position is not to begrudge the Super Falcons and D’Tigress their well earned celebration. Rather, we ask the same level of political will and financial commitment for healthcare workers who have quietly kept Nigerians alive through pandemics, insecurity and chronic under funding. By settling outstanding allowances, implementing the promised salary reviews and prioritising welfare, the government can demonstrate that it truly values both its champions on the field and its “champions” in the hospital wards.
