Fordite, The Accidental Gemstone Made of a Million Cars
Long before modern, automated spray booths existed, old automotive factories accumulated thick, layered build-ups of hand-sprayed paint on their assembly tracks. Over decades, these baked-on layers of colorful paint hardened into a dense, beautifully striped material known as Fordite or "Detroit agate." Today, designers are carving this accidental material into stunning, psychedelic jewelry that serves as a colorful, physical record of classic American manufacturing history.
