Many anesthesia training programs would 50 years ago would require residents to be fitted with a molded earpiece (on top of image). The earpiece was connected to a precordial stethoscope and to a diaphragm over the brachial artery. This was the Ploss stethoscope.

An anesthesiologist will view this anatomical structure several thousand times in the course of a career. It gets familiar...but when it is distorted by tumor or edema it is useful to know the separate anatomical structures (Image from Dornette, 1963; to be continued).
