Deriving “pride” from comparative accomplishments (cont. measuring oneself by relative position) is usually the mark of someone weak, inept, & insecure.
But boasting a second-hand vicarious pride from the accomplishments of one’s nation or tribe is the mark of a pure loser.

Exception: counterpride, as a response when some vicarious prider puts you & your tribe down.
The (Machiavellian) rules for survival.
The top guy should not, himself or his family, be corrupt. Modest living.
He should distribute public money to his partisans, but carefully & in moderation.
His partisans should be more corrupt than he, so he can easily dispense of them, if needed.
Not allow any ostentatious consumption.
Not allow income above certain limit.
Not allow wealth above certain limit.
Control the behavior of the kids of the grandees. Punish them if the kids behave badly (like drive the Ferraris).
