Our ELSINORE star Andrew Scott is honored at @godslovenyc 20th Annual Golden Heart Awards 🏆✨
Writer Stephen Beresford presented him the award for Outstanding Humanitarianism & Cultural Impact at last night's event.
Andrew Scott’s best performance yet is in ‘Elsinore.’ As Ian Charleson, who gets to play Hamlet in the last year of his life, Scott gives a performance that’s as funny as it is heartbreaking. https://t.co/4Ci1lAz17O
Andrew Scott has reflected on the reaction to his ‘Fleabag’ character, the ‘Hot Priest’, and what it meant to him as a gay actor.
Speaking to Variety on 12 September, Scott said there had been a fear that being an out gay actor could affect his ability to be cast as a woman’s love interest.
“I guess there was a fear that I wouldn’t be able to get cast in those roles. That’s what everybody said. But I knew, because when I did plays, that the people that were waiting at the stage door, they knew my sexuality and they did not care.”
The reaction to the ‘Hot Priest’ also helped challenge that idea, and Scott had a pretty brilliant response to the notion that audiences can’t separate an actor from their character.
“I feel very proud that that was quite a big moment because people were like, ‘The actor is gay. Whoa!’ And it is like this idea that the audience is stupid. We go to see ‘Batman,’ and it’s like, ‘Oh my god! He is not a bat?’”

Andrew Scott stars in ‘Elsinore,’ a dramatic film retelling one of the greatest ‘Hamlet’ feats in the history of the British theater: When Ian Charleson took on the role while dying of AIDS, ultimately succumbing to the illness less than two months after his final performance.
Scott delivers a totally unique, equally searing 'Hamlet' in character as Charleson, while also playing a defiant artist facing down the end of his life. He’s an out gay actor portraying a gay actor who came up in a time when being open could mean career suicide. And he’s a credited producer on a movie for the very first time.
Elsinore, which is directed by Simon Stone, written by Stephen Beresford and also stars Olivia Colman and Billie Piper, will screen at various festivals, including Toronto and London, before hitting theaters on November 20.
