Dar es Salaam
Cyprus Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Constantinos Kombos concluded a visit to Tanzania yesterday where, among other things, he held high-level talks with Tanzanian authorities over political developments in the country ahead of the general election in October.
Kombos described his visit to Tanzania as "very productive" after three days of marathon discussions with his host Tanzanian foreign affairs minister Thabit Kombo and other stakeholders.
In the two-pronged visit, Kombos represented Kaja Kallas, the European Unionโs High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, in multilateral discussions with Tanzania.
He also held bilateral meetings with his Tanzanian counterpart in his capacity as the Cypriot foreign minister.
On the multilateral front, Kombos and Kombo discussed political developments in Tanzania ahead of upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections.
Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) passed a resolution in May condemning treason charges against Tanzaniaโs main opposition figure Tundu Lissu.
They also urged Tanzanian authorities to restore CHADEMAโs full participation in the elections, engage in dialogue with all political parties on electoral reform, respect the political partiesโ rights, and guarantee free and fair elections.
The MEPs called on the EU to ensure its development assistance to Tanzania, including the Global Gateway initiative, is compatible with the promotion of human rights, freedom of expression, and fair trial standards.
Kombos focused on the EUโs interest in Tanzania as a strategic partner, citing opportunities in energy, infrastructure, and raw materials.
Tanzania-EU discussions also addressed regional security and investment.
The talks concluded with both ministers emphasising the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation.
On the bilateral side, Kombos trip to Tanzania marked the first direct diplomatic engagement between the two countriesโ foreign ministers and was described by Cypriot officials as โthe beginning of a new framework for bilateral cooperation.โ
During the meeting, Tanzania and Cyprus agreed on an action plan focused on shipping, trade, investment, and agriculture, with an emphasis on achieving measurable outcomes.
Two memoranda of understanding were signed โ the first such agreements between Cyprus and Tanzania โ covering political consultations and the mutual recognition of seafarersโ certificates.
Kombos also expressed appreciation for Tanzaniaโs consistent position on the Cyprus issue.
The Cyprus problem refers to the invasion of Cyprus by Turkey in 1974, which resulted in the partitioning of the island, the North occupied by Turkey and the South by the Greek Cypriots.
