In the early morning hours of July 16, 1918, one of the most dramatic endings in royal history unfolded in a basement room in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Nicholas II, the last Tsar of Russia, along with his wife Alexandra, their five children, their personal physician, and several servants were led into the basement of the Ipatiev House under the pretense of being moved for their safety.

What followed was the sudden and violent end of the three-hundred-year Romanov dynasty.

The order to execute the family came as White Army forces were rapidly closing in on the city, and Bolshevik leaders feared that the former Tsar could become a rallying symbol for their enemies if rescued.

The family had been under increasingly harsh imprisonment since the Bolsheviks came to power in October 1917, moved from location to location as the civil war intensified around them.

Nicholas had abdicated just over a year earlier in March 1917, believing his stepping down might stabilize Russia and spare his family from harm.

Instead, his abdication had only accelerated the revolutionary forces that would ultimately consume him and everyone he loved.

The Bolsheviks buried the bodies in secret, and the true fate of the family remained officially uncertain for decades, feeding persistent rumors and legends that some members had escaped.

It was not until the fall of the Soviet Union that the full story was formally confirmed, and the remains of the family were eventually identified through modern forensic testing.

The Russian Orthodox Church later canonized the family as passion bearers, transforming the executed royals into religious martyrs in the eyes of millions.
