@AgenticV@leninology No, you miss the point. This technology produces outputs which regardless of how arrived at, is reaching levels that for many applications exceed human capabilities. The implications of this are the interesting thing and how it impacts people.
@ECortutto@RetroRobson@leninology Yeah I get where your ire is directed, my angle was less "Wow AI thinks, isn't it amazing" and more: RS is a thinker who I value but who I think is overly dismissive in this area because I do believe that despite the torrent of bullshit some really fascinating stuff is happening.
@BrownBag42069@leninology What exactly thinking is and the degree to which frontier models think is heavily contested. But regardless, people perceive that they produce outputs that can be more reliable than humans in more and more scenarios and this is going to have big consequences and is interesting.
@Scal_Balb@RetroRobson@leninology The point is that they are *perceived* to think effectively enough to be relied upon to produce decision making information and increasingly to be a final decision maker in specific scenarios. That means they will have a major impact on human organisations.
@Scal_Balb@leninology That text can increasingly be used to run computer programs and computer programs control a lot of things like key human infrastructure. AI absolutely can act on information and will increasingly be utilised in places where it is expected to do so.
@ECortutto@RetroRobson@leninology Impoverished philosophy of mind for being interested in the impacts of a novel form of technology on human organisation? Wow.
@Scal_Balb@RetroRobson@leninology Most sizeable public or private businesses right now are focusing heavily on how to use AI more in business processes and decision making. Databases have had an enormous impact on human organisation, I think AI will have more as it will have more direct impact in decision making.
@RetroRobson@leninology Agree, but whatever we call it's process to derive outputs, I think the outputs from AI are going to have a huge impact on human organisations in coming years (months?) and will be more complex, far reaching and interesting than RS's dismissals suggest.
@leninology I'd say that's a form of reasoning even if it's a shit one. It can suggest (or initiate) an action on the basis of carefully calibrated weightings of information- and far more information than any individual human is likely to have. The implications of this are huge.
@thesupermanmx Nonsense, they invent stuff all the time (hallucinations) and as they gain greater independence they will be able to intervene in the world via mechanical bodies and through commandeering humans to intervene on their behalf. Most scientists are simply data gatherers for Mother.
@admcollingwood@policytensor China is perhaps the obvious answer, but also: a lot of people are looking for change and all the others are about protecting specific entrenched interests whereas the VPS implies advancing the interests of x grouping and transforming things.
@NewLeftEViews It requires a lot of abstract thought to imagine theoretical alternatives. People in general look for easy real world examples of better, and in China they have one. "If we were more like China things would be better" is a simple and powerful argument.
