To report on the story, I spent a month in Panama's Ngäbe-Buglé territory and spoke with young men living with HIV about the social stigmas they face carrying the virus and about the multiple challenges they face to access treatment:

This story would be different if 🇵🇦 had access to long acting injectable PrEP and ART.
Why Indigenous Panamanians face an 'uncontrolled' HIV outbreak : Goats and Soda : NPR https://t.co/RXdWcNyj1i
While HIV and AIDS medication is free in Panama, there are only 2 antiretroviral clinics serving the 2,700-square-mile Ngäbe-Buglé territory.
Those infected often don't have the money to travel to these clinics, while others refuse treatment to avoid social stigma.
In Panama, an HIV outbreak in the indigenous Ngäbe-Buglé territory has been deemed an "uncontrolled epidemic" by lead health officials and epidemiologists. Spent a month on assignment w/ @ICFJ in 2024 to tell this largely uncovered story for @NPR:
https://t.co/GTVVC4j0B3
* In the first 10 months of 2024, there were 258 new HIV and AIDS cases detected in the Ngäbe-Buglé territory, an incidence rate nearly four times higher than the country's urban provinces and Panama City

Since 2011, the Floating Doctors have provided medical services to thousands of members of the Ngäbe-Buglé indigenous group, most who have to walk hours to get to the nearest health clinic or hospital.
Thanks to @ICFJ and @AJEnglish for the opportunity to tell their story.
Spent a week in June in the Panama rainforest documenting the work of the @floatingdoctors, a group of medical volunteers that travel to the country's most remote regions to provide healthcare to indigenous communities:
