The United States has urged Nigeria to intensify efforts to protect Christian communities from attacks and commit greater resources to ensuring the safe and sustainable return of millions of internally displaced persons. During a high-level visit to Abuja, US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia held talks with senior Nigerian officials on security cooperation, religious freedom, counterterrorism, justice sector reforms, digital innovation and regional stability.

While acknowledging progress under the US-Nigeria Joint Working Group, Washington said more must be done to safeguard vulnerable communities and address the country’s displacement crisis. The discussions come ahead of an August meeting in Washington, DC, where both countries will review Nigeria’s progress on security, terrorism prosecutions and concerns linked to its designation as a Country of Particular Concern.

POWA PRESIDENT CONDUCTS SURPRISE WELFARE OUTREACH IN ABUJA BARRACKS

The National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Disu, carried out unannounced welfare visits to police barracks in the Federal Capital Territory on 14–15 July 2026, ahead of the forthcoming POWA National Convention.

The outreach covered Area C Police Barracks, Nyanya, and 44 PMF Barracks, Kuje. Moving through the markets at Area C Barracks without prior notice, the POWA President and her management team engaged directly with women traders, widows, and spouses of officers. She observed sparsely stocked shops and listened to firsthand accounts of the economic challenges confronting police families.

Immediate interventions included cash grants, business starter packs, and food items for selected beneficiaries to restock shops and strengthen household resilience. Beneficiaries expressed deep appreciation for the timely support.

In her remarks, Chief Mrs. Disu emphasized that the visit was deliberately unannounced to capture an authentic picture of the realities confronting police families. She noted that only by witnessing these challenges firsthand can POWA design and deliver support that truly addresses their needs.

The outreach was conducted under the POWA CARES Initiative, which promotes sustainable healthcare, welfare, and economic empowerment for police families. The initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON.

This effort also sets the tone for the upcoming POWA National Convention, themed “The Resilient Woman: Navigating Life’s Challenges with Strength, Purpose and Grace”, scheduled for 16–18 July 2026. The convention will focus on healthcare, mental wellness, economic empowerment, and family support systems.

The Renewed Hope National Media Tour arrived in Imo State, continuing its mission to provide Nigerians with a first-hand view of transformative federal and state government projects across the South-East.

65 BATTALION TROOPS RAID SUSPECTED HIDEOUT IN EPE, ARREST 24 FOREIGN NATIONALS

As part of ongoing efforts to rid the 81 Division Area of Responsibility (AOR) of criminal elements, illegal immigrants and other security threats, troops of 65 Battalion have arrested 24 foreign nationals during a coordinated raid on a suspected hideout in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State. The operation was conducted following credible intelligence on the presence of undocumented foreign nationals within the Battalion's AOR.

Acting on credible intelligence, troops of the Battalion, in conjunction with members of the Vigilante Group, raided a secluded fenced compound located at Imokun in the Odo-Noforija/Poka axis of Epe. During the operation, 24 foreign nationals comprising 15 males and 9 females were apprehended.

Preliminary profiling revealed that the suspects are nationals of various West and Central African countries, including Cameroon (10), Togo (6), Côte d’Ivoire (3), Republic of Benin (3), Burkina Faso (1) and Guinea-Bissau (1). Initial investigations were conducted to ascertain the suspects' immigration status, purpose of stay and possible involvement in any unlawful activities. Efforts are also underway to identify and question the owner of the premises to provide further insight into the circumstances surrounding their residence and activities at the location.

The suspects were officially handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Lagos State Command, on 16 July 2026 for further investigation, profiling and necessary administrative action in accordance with extant immigration laws and regulations.

Commending the troops for their professionalism and vigilance, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Adebayo Babalola, charged personnel to sustain the ongoing operations and intensify efforts aimed at denying criminal elements, illegal immigrants and other security threats in the Division's AOR. He further reaffirmed the Division's commitment to supporting relevant security agencies in maintaining peace, security and public safety across the AOR.
